OET (OET-RV)unintelligent, untrustworthy, unloving, and unmerciful.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 1:18–32: God is angry with people because they sin

In this section, Paul said that it is clear that God is angry about the bad things that people do. God has shown all people who he is, but they have rejected him. So they became fools and worshiped things instead of God. And so God put them under the control of sinful desires even more.

Here are other possible headings for this section:

The reason why God is angry with people

God’s Wrath on Unrighteousness (ESV)

People do what is not right in God’s sight and so God is angry

1:31

They are senseless, faithless, heartless, merciless.

They are senseless, faithless, heartless, merciless: The Greek words are literally “not-understanding, not-keeping-their-word, not-having-affection, not-having-mercy.” If possible, use words that show the meaning of “not” or “without” each time here. For example:

no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy (NIV11)

unthinking, unfaithful to their word/promises, unaffectionate, unmerciful

senseless: The Greek word here refers to not being able to understand things well. It is the same word as the Greek word that the BSB translates as “foolish” in 1:21. See how you translated this word in 1:21.

faithless: Here this word refers to making promises but not doing as promised. Here are other ways to translate this word:

untrustworthy (NASB)

they do not keep their promises (GNT)

break their promises (NLT)

Concerning what they say they will do, they do not do (it)Otomi Back Translation on TW.

heartless: There is a textual issue in 1:31: (1) Some Greek manuscripts have the word heartless (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NASB, CEV, NET, NABRE, REB, ESV, NCV). (2) Some Greek manuscripts have the words heartless (and) implacable (KJV only). It is recommended that you follow option (1). The Greek word here refers to not having good feelings toward others or not caring for others. Here are other ways to translate this word:

without natural affection (KJV)

hardhearted (BDAG)

merciless: This word means “without pity or mercy.” These people show no mercy to others. Here are other ways to translate this word:

no mercy (NIV11)

no…pity for others (GNT)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj

ἀσυνέτους, ἀσυνθέτους, ἀστόργους, ἀνελεήμονας

unintelligent untrustworthy unloving unmerciful

Paul is using these adjectives as nouns in order to describe a group of people. If your language does not use adjectives in the same way, you could translate this with a noun phrase. Alternate translation: [people who are senseless, faithless, heartless, and merciless]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

1:29-31 This list of sins follows a popular Hellenistic literary form called a vice list. While not exhaustive, it reminds readers of various forms that evil might take.
