Section 1:8–17: Paul wanted to visit the believers at/in Rome

In this section, Paul thanked God that, in many places, people had heard about the faith of the believers in Rome. He also told them that he was asking God to make a way for him to go and visit them. He expected that he and they together would strengthen each other in their faith in Jesus Christ. He told them that he had been wanting to visit them for a long time and was eager to preach the gospel to the people there.

Then Paul wrote down the main things he wanted to talk about in the rest of the letter. He spoke of the gospel and who it is for.

that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged

that is: Here the Greek phrase indicates that Paul wanted to add to what he said in 1:11.Cranfield (page 80) says that Paul “amends…what had been said by expressing a complementary truth. Some scholars say that Paul corrects himself. But that does not mean that what Paul said in 1:11 was wrong, but it was incomplete. Not only did he expect to encourage the believers in Rome (1:11) but he also expected that he and they would encourage each other (1:12). For example:

that you and I may be mutually encouraged: This clause is passive. Some languages must use an active clause. For example:

God may encourage you(plur) and I together

mutually: Here this word refers to being together and experiencing the same thing. See the above example.

encouraged: This word refers to helping someone to have more hope about something or to have more confidence to do something. Here are other ways to translate this word:

by each other’s faith: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as by each other’s faith is literally “through the faith in one another, both yours and mine.” Paul said “both yours and mine” to be clear that he included himself when he said each other here. One of them talking about his or her faith would encourage the others, including Paul.Dunn (page 31).

faith: To have faith in a person refers to believing in him, who he is, and who he claims to be. See how you translated this word in 1:5.
