OET (OET-RV) slanderers, god-haters, abusers, proud, braggers, inventors of evil, unable to be persuaded by their parents,
In this section, Paul said that it is clear that God is angry about the bad things that people do. God has shown all people who he is, but they have rejected him. So they became fools and worshiped things instead of God. And so God put them under the control of sinful desires even more.
Here are other possible headings for this section:
The reason why God is angry with people
God’s Wrath on Unrighteousness (ESV)
People do what is not right in God’s sight and so God is angry
slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant,
insult/dishonor others, hate God, are proud and violent, conceited,
and say evil things against others. And they hate God, and are very proud of themselves, and think of themselves as better than everyone else,
slanderers: This word refers to someone who says something for the purpose of hurting someone else’s reputation, name, or status. The words are spoken openly, in public, rather than what gossips do. Here are other ways to translate this word:
people who speak evil of others
hurt people on purpose with what they say
God-haters: There are two ways to interpret the Greek word that the BSB translates as God-haters:
It refers to people who hate God. For example:
God-haters (BSB) (BSB, RSV, NIV, ESV, NABRE, NASB, KJV, NLT, GW, CEV, NET, NCV)
It indicates that God hates these people. For example:
they are hateful to God (GNT) (GNT)
It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1), because “God hating them” is not a deed coming from them like the rest of the words and phrases in this list.Morris (on TW). Here are other ways to translate this phrase:
They hate God (NCV)
hating God
insolent: The Greek word that the BSB translates as insolent refers to a person who is very proud and therefore is violent against others. Here are other ways to translate this Greek word:
violently proud
both proud and violent
arrogant: This word refers to a person who is very proud of himself and thinks that he is a better person than others. Here are other ways to translate this word:
haughty (ESV)
conceited (CEV)
very proud of himself
puts himself above others
and boastful. They invent new forms of evil; they disobey their parents.
always bragging, looking/hunting for and finding new kinds of evil deeds, disobeying their parents.
and praise themselves. And they are always discovering new ways to do evil, and refuse to obey their father and mother.
boastful: Here this word refers to praising oneself. Here are other ways to translate this word:
brag about themselves (NCV)
always praise themselves
They invent new forms of evil: This phrase refers to finding new kinds of evil deeds or new ways to do evil things. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:
thinking of new ways to do evil
seeking/finding new kinds of evil deeds
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj
θεοστυγεῖς, ὑβριστάς, ὑπερηφάνους, ἀλαζόνας & ἀπειθεῖς
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: καταλάλους Θεοστυγεῖς ὑβριστάς ὑπερηφάνους ἀλαζόνας ἐφευρετάς κακῶν γονεῦσιν ἀπειθεῖς)
Paul is using these adjectives as nouns in order to describe a group of people. If your language does not use adjectives in the same way, you could translate this with a noun phrase. Alternate translation: [people who hate God, people who are insolent, people who are arrogant, people who are boastful … people who are disobedient]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns
καταλάλους & ἐφευρετὰς κακῶν
slanderers & (Some words not found in SR-GNT: καταλάλους Θεοστυγεῖς ὑβριστάς ὑπερηφάνους ἀλαζόνας ἐφευρετάς κακῶν γονεῦσιν ἀπειθεῖς)
If your language does not use abstract nouns for the ideas of slanderers and inventors, you could express the same ideas in another way. Alternate translation: [people who speak against others … people who invent ways to do evil things]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / possession
ἐφευρετὰς κακῶν
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: καταλάλους Θεοστυγεῖς ὑβριστάς ὑπερηφάνους ἀλαζόνας ἐφευρετάς κακῶν γονεῦσιν ἀπειθεῖς)
Paul is using the possessive form to describe inventors who invent evil things. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: [inventing evil things]
1:29-31 This list of sins follows a popular Hellenistic literary form called a vice list. While not exhaustive, it reminds readers of various forms that evil might take.
OET (OET-LV) slanderers, god-hating, abusers, proud, braggers, inventors of_evil, to_parents unpersuadable,
OET (OET-RV) slanderers, god-haters, abusers, proud, braggers, inventors of evil, unable to be persuaded by their parents,
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
