OET (OET-LV)Not and I_am_wanting you_all to_be_not_knowing, brothers, that often I_purposed to_come to you_all, and I_was_forbidden until the time presently, in_order_that some fruit I_may_have also among you_all, as even among the other pagans.

OET (OET-RV)Brothers and sisters, I don’t want you to be unaware that I had planned several times to come to you but I was vetoed until recently so that I’d also have a harvest among you similar to those among the other non-Jews.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / litotes

οὐ θέλω δὲ ὑμᾶς ἀγνοεῖν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Οὒ θέλω δέ ὑμᾶς ἀγνοεῖν ἀδελφοί ὅτι πολλάκις προεθέμην ἐλθεῖν πρός ὑμᾶς καί ἐκωλύθην ἄχρι τοῦ δεῦρο ἵνα τινά καρπόν σχῶ καί ἐν ὑμῖν καθώς καί ἐν τοῖς λοιποῖς ἔθνεσιν)

Here Paul uses a figure of speech that expresses a strong positive meaning by using a negative word together with a word that is the opposite of the intended meaning. If it would be helpful in your language, you can express the meaning positively. Alternate translation: [I definitely want you to be informed]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἀγνοεῖν

˓to_be˒_not_knowing

If your language does not use the passive form in this way you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [to not know]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations

ἀδελφοί

brothers

Although the term brother is masculine, Paul is using the word here to refer to both male and female believers in Christ. Alternate translation: [brothers and sisters]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

καὶ ἐκωλύθην ἄχρι τοῦ δεῦρο

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Οὒ θέλω δέ ὑμᾶς ἀγνοεῖν ἀδελφοί ὅτι πολλάκις προεθέμην ἐλθεῖν πρός ὑμᾶς καί ἐκωλύθην ἄχρι τοῦ δεῦρο ἵνα τινά καρπόν σχῶ καί ἐν ὑμῖν καθώς καί ἐν τοῖς λοιποῖς ἔθνεσιν)

Paul assumes that his readers will know that until now means “even at the present time.” He does not mean that he was no longer hindered at the moment he wrote these words. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [but I have been hindered and still am hindered now]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἐκωλύθην

˱I˲_˓was˒_forbidden

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you must state who did the action, Paul implies that “God” did it. Alternate translation: [God hindered me]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἵνα τινὰ καρπὸν σχῶ καὶ ἐν ὑμῖν

in_order_that (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Οὒ θέλω δέ ὑμᾶς ἀγνοεῖν ἀδελφοί ὅτι πολλάκις προεθέμην ἐλθεῖν πρός ὑμᾶς καί ἐκωλύθην ἄχρι τοῦ δεῦρο ἵνα τινά καρπόν σχῶ καί ἐν ὑμῖν καθώς καί ἐν τοῖς λοιποῖς ἔθνεσιν)

Here, fruit could refer to: (1) people believing in the gospel as a result of Paul’s preaching, which would connect this verse to the idea in [1:15](../01/15.md). Alternate translation: [so that I might lead people to salvation among you also] (2) strengthening the believers in Rome, in which case this would have the same meaning as “some spiritual, gracious gift” in [1:11](../01/11.md). Alternate translation: [so that I might strengthen you also]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

1:13 brothers and sisters: This Greek word (adelphoi) describes people who are in a familial relationship. Paul and other New Testament writers use this word to indicate that Christians are so intimately tied to one another in Christ that they are family. The word refers to both male and female Christians.
• I was prevented until now: Paul wrote this letter when he was in Corinth toward the end of his third missionary journey (see Acts 20:2-4; cp. Rom 16:21-23). The need to plant and nourish churches in the eastern Mediterranean had occupied Paul up to this point. Before he could visit the Roman Christians, he first needed to return to Jerusalem to deliver a gift of money collected from the Gentile churches for the impoverished Jewish Christians (15:23-29).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
