OET (OET-LV)whom even he_called, us not only from the_Youdaiōns, but also from the_pagans?

OET (OET-RV)Yes, he even called us, not only from among the Jews but also from non-Jews.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 9:14–29: God always does what is right

In this section, Paul began by asking if God acts unjustly when he chooses some people and not others. Paul answered his own question with a strong “No!” All God’s choices depend on his mercy and not on anything about the people he chooses. God made Pharaoh the way he was when he wanted the Jews to leave Egypt.

Paul spoke to a possible complaint about no one ultimately being able to resist God’s will. He said that complaining to God about that is futile.

God shows his anger and power against people he has hardened. He does this to show how great his mercy is to other people. Both Jews and Gentiles are eligible to receive his mercy.

Here are other possible headings for this section:

God’s choices/will are/is sovereign/supreme

God chooses whom he wants for both Jews and Gentiles

9:24a

including us, whom He has called

including us, whom He has called: The Greek is literally “whom also/even he called us.” The word us then explains whom He has called, which describes the vessels of mercy.Cranfield (pages 497–498) and Morris (page 369). All three words or phrases refer to believers in Jesus. Here are other ways to translate these words:

whom he also called, namely, us

He also called those vessels/people to faith. This refers to us

called: Here the word called means “chosen to be given a special benefit or purpose.” God invites people to believe in Jesus. Some of them have accepted and become believers in Jesus. See how you translated this word in 1:6 or 8:30.

9:24b

not only from the Jews, but also from the Gentiles?

not only from the Jews, but also from the Gentiles: This describes the pronoun “us” here. Some believers are Jews and some are Gentiles. The words not only…but also emphasizes that God called Gentiles too.

from…from: The word from indicates that God called some Jews and some Gentiles.

Gentiles: This word refers to people who are not Jews. See how you translated this word in 1:5 or 3:29.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-words-phrases

καὶ & ἡμᾶς

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὕς καί ἐκάλεσεν ἡμάς οὒ μόνον ἐξ Ἰουδαίων ἀλλά καί ἐξ ἐθνῶν)

Here, even indicates that this verse continues the sentence that Paul began in [9:22](../09/22.md). If you divide the sentence into shorter sentences, you will need to repeat some of the information from the previous verses here. Alternate translation: [What if even we are vessels of mercy] or [Even we are vessels of mercy]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / exclusive

ἡμᾶς

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὕς καί ἐκάλεσεν ἡμάς οὒ μόνον ἐξ Ἰουδαίων ἀλλά καί ἐξ ἐθνῶν)

Here, us refers to Paul and his Christian readers, so us would be inclusive. Your language may require you to mark this form.

Note 3 topic: writing-pronouns

ἐκάλεσεν

˱he˲_called

Here, he refers to God. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [God called]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / distinguish

οὐ μόνον ἐξ Ἰουδαίων, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐξ ἐθνῶν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὕς καί ἐκάλεσεν ἡμάς οὒ μόνον ἐξ Ἰουδαίων ἀλλά καί ἐξ ἐθνῶν)

This phrase gives further information about the people whom God called. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make the relationship between these phrases clearer. Alternate translation: [who are those people not only from the Jews, but also from the Gentiles]

OET (OET-RV)Yes, he even called us, not only from among the Jews but also from non-Jews.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
