OET (OET-LV)For/Because ^his_message completing and cutting_short will_be_executing the_master on the earth.

OET (OET-RV)because Yahweh will be abbreviating and terminating his message on the earth.’

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 9:14–29: God always does what is right

In this section, Paul began by asking if God acts unjustly when he chooses some people and not others. Paul answered his own question with a strong “No!” All God’s choices depend on his mercy and not on anything about the people he chooses. God made Pharaoh the way he was when he wanted the Jews to leave Egypt.

Paul spoke to a possible complaint about no one ultimately being able to resist God’s will. He said that complaining to God about that is futile.

God shows his anger and power against people he has hardened. He does this to show how great his mercy is to other people. Both Jews and Gentiles are eligible to receive his mercy.

Here are other possible headings for this section:

God’s choices/will are/is sovereign/supreme

God chooses whom he wants for both Jews and Gentiles

9:28

For the Lord will carry out His sentence on the earth thoroughly and decisively.”

For: This word introduces an explanation about something Isaiah said in 9:27.

Lord: The word Lord refers to someone who has authority over people. See how you translated this word in 1:4 or 8:39.

In this Old Testament quote it refers to God. In some languages it is more natural to attach Lord to a name. For example:

Lord God

will carry out His sentence: The Greek is literally “will do (the) word.” It indicates that God will do what he had said earlier, that is, cause destruction on the earth. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:

will do what he said earlier

will do what he warned that he would do

on the earth: This phrase implies the people of the whole world. In some languages a literal translation would only refer to the land and trees and such things. If that is true in your language, add the implied information. For example:

on the people of the earth

thoroughly: There are several ways to interpret the Greek word that the BSB translates as thoroughly:

  1. It refers to doing something completely here. For example:

thoroughly (BSB) (BSB, RSV, GNT, NASB, ESV, KJV, GW, NET, REB, NCV)

  2. It refers to doing something quickly here. For example:

with speed (NIV) (NIV, NLT, CEV)

  3. It refers to doing something without waiting here. For example:

    without hesitation (NJB) (NJB)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1), because word is formed from “with” and the verb “to complete.”

decisively: There is a textual issue in 9:28b: (1) Some Greek manuscripts have the word cutting-short (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NASB, NABRE, ESV, NLT, GW, NET, REB, NCV). (2) Some Greek manuscripts have the words cutting-short in righteousness because a short work (KJV only). It is recommended that you follow option (1). The Greek NT 5 says that option (1) is certain. There are several ways to interpret the Greek word that the BSB translates as decisively:

  1. It means quickly here. For example:

quickly (NASB) (GNT, NJB, NASB, ESV, NABRE, NRSV, NET, NCV)

  2. It means to interrupt something that is happening here. For example:

    cut [it] short (KJV) (KJV)

  3. It means decisively here. For example:

with finality (NIV) (BSB, RSV, NIV, NLT, CEV)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1), because the BDAG says it refers to putting a limit on something, often implying an abrupt ending of it.page 975.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

γὰρ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: λόγον Γάρ συντελῶν καί συντέμνων ποιήσει Κύριος ἐπί τῆς γῆς)

Here, for indicates that what follows is the reason why the statement in the previous verse is true. Use a natural way in your language for indicating a reason. Alternate translation: [This is true since]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

λόγον

˓his˒_word

Here, word refers to God’s promise to both punish the Israelites and save a remnant from among them. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [his promise to punish and save]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

συντελῶν

completing

Here, finishing refers to successfully completing something. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [successfully completing it]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

συντέμνων

cutting_short

Here, cutting it short refers to finish doing something quickly. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [ending it quickly]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / quotemarks

συντελῶν καὶ συντέμνων

completing (Some words not found in SR-GNT: λόγον Γάρ συντελῶν καί συντέμνων ποιήσει Κύριος ἐπί τῆς γῆς)

The end of this verse is the end of a quotation from [Isaiah 10:22–23](../isa/10/22.md). It may be helpful to your readers to indicate this with a closing quotation mark or with whatever other punctuation or convention your language uses to indicate the end of a quotation.
