OET (OET-LV) And_Shəmūʼēl not_yet he_knew DOM YHWH and_not_yet it_was_revealed to_him/it the_word_of YHWH.
OET (OET-RV) (At this point, Shemuel didn’t really know Yahweh, because Yahweh hadn’t revealed himself to him before.)
Note 1 topic: writing-background
וּשְׁמוּאֵ֕ל טֶ֖רֶם יָדַ֣ע אֶת־יְהוָ֑ה וְטֶ֛רֶם יִגָּלֶ֥ה אֵלָ֖יו דְּבַר־יְהוָֽה
and,Samuel before/not_yet knowing DOM YHWH and,not_yet revealed to=him/it word/matter_of YHWH
The author is providing background information to help readers understand what happens next in the story. In your translation, introduce this information in a way that would be natural in your own language and culture.
Note 2 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result
וּשְׁמוּאֵ֕ל טֶ֖רֶם יָדַ֣ע אֶת־יְהוָ֑ה וְטֶ֛רֶם יִגָּלֶ֥ה אֵלָ֖יו דְּבַר־יְהוָֽה
and,Samuel before/not_yet knowing DOM YHWH and,not_yet revealed to=him/it word/matter_of YHWH
If it would be more natural in your language, you could reverse the order of these phrases, since the second phrase gives the reason for the result that the first phrase describes. Alternate translation: [Because the word of Yahweh had not yet been revealed to Samuel, Samuel did not yet know Yahweh]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
וּשְׁמוּאֵ֕ל טֶ֖רֶם יָדַ֣ע אֶת־יְהוָ֑ה
and,Samuel before/not_yet knowing DOM YHWH
The expression did not … know Yahweh has a different meaning here than it has in [2:12](../02/12.md). The UST translation of both verses models one way of showing the difference in meaning.
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
וְטֶ֛רֶם יִגָּלֶ֥ה אֵלָ֖יו דְּבַר־יְהוָֽה
and,not_yet revealed to=him/it word/matter_of YHWH
If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [for Yahweh had not yet revealed his word to him]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
וְטֶ֛רֶם & דְּבַר־יְהוָֽה
and,not_yet & word/matter_of YHWH
The author is using the term word by association to mean what Yahweh would have said by using words. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [for a message from Yahweh]
3:7 Samuel did not yet know the Lord: He lacked direct experience of the Lord. In contrast, Eli’s sons did not know the Lord (see study note on 2:12) in that they were morally and spiritually deficient.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
