TSNTyndale Study Notes:

2:2 The gods of the nations were not a neutral force, so destroying the pagan altars was basic to covenant obedience. Not doing so would inevitably involve social and religious compromise, and the people of the land would oppress Israel (see Deut 20:17-18).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes

and,you_all not make covenant with,inhabitants the=earth/land the,this altars,their tear_down,

If you decided in the previous verse to translate this quotation in such a way that there would not be a quotation within a quotation, you can continue doing that here. Alternate translation: “But I also said that you were not to cut a covenant with the dwellers of this land. You were to demolish their altars”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וְלֹֽא־שְׁמַעְתֶּ֥ם בְּקֹלִ֖י

and=not obeyed in/on/at/with,voice,me

As the General Introduction to Judges discusses, here the word heard has the specific sense of “obeyed.” Alternate translation: “But you have not obeyed my voice”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

וְלֹֽא־שְׁמַעְתֶּ֥ם בְּקֹלִ֖י

and=not obeyed in/on/at/with,voice,me

The angel, speaking on behalf of Yahweh, is using the word voice by association to mean what he said by using his voice. Alternate translation: “But you have disobeyed what I commanded”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

מַה־זֹּ֥את עֲשִׂיתֶֽם

what? this done

The angel is using the question form for emphasis. If a speaker of your language would not use the question form for that purpose, you could translate this as a statement or as an exclamation. Alternate translation: “You should not have done this!”
