UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

אֶל כֶּ֤תֶף ל֨וּזָה֙ נֶ֔גְבָּה

to/towards slope Luz,to south,to

The author is speaking of the hill on which Luz was built as if it were a living thing that had a shoulder. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “to the southern slope of the hill on which the city of Luz is built”

Note 2 topic: writing-background

הִ֖יא בֵּֽית אֵ֑ל

she/it house_of -el

The author is providing background information to help readers understand that the city formerly known as Luz is the one they know as Bethel. In your translation, present this information in a way that would be natural in your own language and culture.

Tribal Allotments of the Promised Land

After the Israelites had conquered portions of the Promised Land and Joshua had grown old, the Lord directed him to divide the rest of the land among the tribes of Israel as their inheritance (Joshua 13-20). The eastern tribes had already been allotted their land under Moses’ leadership (Numbers 32), but they continued to help the other tribes drive out the Canaanites from land west of the Jordan River. The Lord also instructed the Israelites to designate several cities of refuge, where someone could flee for protection from an avenger if they accidentally killed someone (Numbers 35; Joshua 20).
