UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

אֶל בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל

to/towards sons_of Yisrael

The context makes clear that the author is using an entire group, the sons of Israel, to mean one part of that group, the Israelite tribes that had not yet received any land. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “to the leaders of those tribes”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

until how? you_all slack about,going_in to,take_possession_of DOM the=earth/land which/who he/it_gave to/for=you_all YHWH god fathers,your_all's

Joshua is using the question form for emphasis. If a speaker of your language would not use the question form for that purpose, you could translate this as a statement or as an exclamation. Alternate translation: “You must stop being so slow to enter and take possession of the land that Yahweh, the God of your fathers, has given to you!”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

אֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶֽם

fathers,your_all's

Joshua is speaking as if these people were the actual fathers of the current generation. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “your ancestors”

Tribal Allotments of the Promised Land

After the Israelites had conquered portions of the Promised Land and Joshua had grown old, the Lord directed him to divide the rest of the land among the tribes of Israel as their inheritance (Joshua 13-20). The eastern tribes had already been allotted their land under Moses’ leadership (Numbers 32), but they continued to help the other tribes drive out the Canaanites from land west of the Jordan River. The Lord also instructed the Israelites to designate several cities of refuge, where someone could flee for protection from an avenger if they accidentally killed someone (Numbers 35; Joshua 20).
