Now there was one man from Zorah

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_was (a)_man one(ms) of,Zorah from,tribe the,Danites and=his/its=name Mānōaḩ and=his/its=woman/wife infertile and=not had_~_children )

The author is introducing a new character to the story. Use a natural way in your language to introduce new characters in a story. Alternate translation: “Now there was a certain man from Zorah”

Note 2 topic: translate-names

Zorah & Manoah

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_was (a)_man one(ms) of,Zorah from,tribe the,Danites and=his/its=name Mānōaḩ and=his/its=woman/wife infertile and=not had_~_children )

The word Zorah is the name of a town. The word Manoah is the name of a man.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

from the clan of the Danite

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_was (a)_man one(ms) of,Zorah from,tribe the,Danites and=his/its=name Mānōaḩ and=his/its=woman/wife infertile and=not had_~_children )

The author assumes that his readers will understand that he is referring to the tribe of Dan as a clan because it was a small tribe. He also uses the term “clan” elsewhere in the book, but sometimes he also uses the term tribe. Alternate translation: “from the tribe of Dan”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / genericnoun

the Danite

These phrases mean similar things. The author is using them together for emphasis. If it would be clearer in your language, you could express the meaning with a single phrase. Alternate translation: “was unable to have children”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

13:2 Prior to their migration to the extreme north (ch 18), the tribe of Dan attempted to settle in Israel’s southwest (Josh 19:40-48). This put them in direct conflict with the incoming Philistines.
• Zorah was west of Judah, in the area newly occupied by the Philistines. Both Dan and neighboring Judah submitted to Philistine dominance (Judg 14:4; 15:11).
