OET (OET-LV)And_he/it_said Yəhōshūˊa why bring_trouble_on_us bring_trouble_you YHWH in_the_day the_this and_stoned DOM_him/it all Yisrāʼēl/(Israel) stone[s] and_burned DOM_them in/on/at/with_fire and_stoned DOM_them in/on/at/with_stones.

OET (OET-RV)and he said, “Why did you cause trouble for us? Yahweh will trouble you today.” And the people executed him by throwing rocks at him. Then they threw rocks at them all and burnt the bodies

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

מֶ֣ה עֲכַרְתָּ֔נוּ

what? (Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said Yəhōshūˊa/(Joshua) what? bring_trouble_on,us bring_~_trouble,you YHWH in_the=day the=this and,stoned DOM=him/it all Yisrael stones and,burned DOM=them in/on/at/with,fire and,stoned DOM=them in/on/at/with,stones )

Joshua is using the question form to rebuke Achan. If a speaker of your language would not use the question form for that purpose, you could translate this as a statement or as an exclamation and communicate the emphasis in another way. Alternate translation: “You should not have troubled us like this!”

Note 2 topic: writing-poetry

וַיִּרְגְּמ֨וּ אֹת֤וֹ כָל־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֶ֔בֶן & וַיִּסְקְל֥וּ אֹתָ֖ם בָּאֲבָנִֽים

and,stoned DOM=him/it all Yisrael stones & and,stoned DOM=them in/on/at/with,stones

For emphasis, the author is using a construction in which a verb and its object come from the same root. You may be able to use the same construction in your language to express the meaning here. Alternatively, your language may have another way of showing the emphasis. Alternate translation: “And all of Israel stoned him to death … and they stoned them to death”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / events

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said Yəhōshūˊa/(Joshua) what? bring_trouble_on,us bring_~_trouble,you YHWH in_the=day the=this and,stoned DOM=him/it all Yisrael stones and,burned DOM=them in/on/at/with,fire and,stoned DOM=them in/on/at/with,stones )

It may be helpful to reorder the last sentence to make it clear that the Israelites burned Achan and his family after they stoned them. Alternate translation: “And after they had stoned them with stones, then they burned them with fire”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicitinfo

וַיִּשְׂרְפ֤וּ אֹתָם֙ בָּאֵ֔שׁ

and,burned DOM=them in/on/at/with,fire

It might seem that the expression burned … with fire contains extra information that would be unnatural to express in your language. If so, you can shorten it or use an expression that would be more natural. Alternate translation: “And they burned them up completely” or “And they set fire to their bodies”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

7:25 Stoning was one prescribed means of execution (see, e.g., Exod 19:13).
