SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 19:45–48: Jesus expelled sellers from the temple courtyard

In this section, Jesus went to the temple in the city of Jerusalem. There he drove out the people who were selling things in the temple area. Then he quoted what God said in Isaiah 56:7: God intended his temple to be a place of prayer. Then Jesus told them that in contrast, they had made it “a den of robbers.” This is a reference to Jeremiah 7:11, where God used this phrase to accuse people who had done evil things in his temple. By using this phrase, Jesus implied that the sellers were cheating people and working against God’s purpose for the temple.

At the end of this section, Luke summarized the events of the next few days. Jesus taught in the temple. The Jewish leaders were angry and wanted to kill him. But they could not do it because he was surrounded by many people who listened eagerly to his teachings.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

Jesus Goes to the Temple (GNT)

Jesus Clears the Temple (NLT)

Jesus sends the merchants from the temple

Parallel passages for this section occur in Matthew 21:12–17, Mark 11:15–18, and John 2:13–16.

Paragraph 19:47–48

This paragraph provides background information for the events in chapter 20. Use a natural way in your language to translate this as background information.

19:48a

Yet they could not find a way to do so,

Yet they could not find a way to do so: This clause contrasts with the preceding verse, so the BSB begins it with Yet. Although the Jewish leaders were continually trying to cause Jesus’ death, they were unsuccessful.

The clause they could not find a way to do so indicates that the Jewish religious leaders were unable to capture and kill Jesus secretly. They wanted to arrest Jesus when he was alone. Then they wanted to make the Romans believe that Jesus deserved to die. They could not find a good opportunity to do either of these things. Here is another way to translate this:

But they did not know how they could do it (NCV)

19:48b

because all the people hung on His words.

because all the people hung on His words: This clause gives the reason that the Jewish leaders were unable to have Jesus killed. All the people were continually with him, listening to him teach. The Jewish leaders could not arrest Jesus secretly because these people would have opposed such an act against him. Express this reason in a natural way in your language.

all the people hung on His words: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as all the people hung on His words is an idiom. It indicates that everyone was eagerly listening to everything that Jesus said. Some other ways to translate this phrase are:

all the people were listening closely to him (NCV)

all the people listened with full/great attention

all the people were eager to hear him (GW)

all the people: The phrase all the people refers to the large crowds of people that were coming to the temple during this time. It does not literally mean all the people in Jerusalem. It probably included many of the people who lived in Jerusalem and also many people who had come to Jerusalem for the Passover celebration.

General Comment on 19:48a–b

In some languages it may be more natural to change the order of clauses in this verse. For example:

But/Yet 48bbecause all the people hung on his words, 48athe Jewish leaders could not find a way to kill him.

καὶ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί οὐχ εὕρισκον τό τί ποιήσωσιν ὁ λαός γάρ ἅπας ἐξεκρέματο αὐτοῦ ἀκούων)

Luke uses the word And to introduce a contrast between what the Jewish leaders were trying to do and what they were able to do. Alternate translation: [But]

οὐχ εὕρισκον τὸ τί ποιήσωσιν

not ˱they˲_˓were˒_finding (Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί οὐχ εὕρισκον τό τί ποιήσωσιν ὁ λαός γάρ ἅπας ἐξεκρέματο αὐτοῦ ἀκούων)

Alternate translation: [they were not able to find a way to kill Jesus]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole

ὁ λαὸς & ἅπας

the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί οὐχ εὕρισκον τό τί ποιήσωσιν ὁ λαός γάρ ἅπας ἐξεκρέματο αὐτοῦ ἀκούων)

Luke is using the term all as a generalization for emphasis. Alternate translation: [so many of the people]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἐξεκρέμετο αὐτοῦ ἀκούων

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: καί οὐχ εὕρισκον τό τί ποιήσωσιν ὁ λαός γάρ ἅπας ἐξεκρέματο αὐτοῦ ἀκούων)

Luke speaks of the people hanging on Jesus to emphasize how closely they were listening to what he said. Alternate translation: [were paying close attention to him to hear what he was saying]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

19:45-48 Having just entered Jerusalem as the Messiah, Jesus performed a messianic action (cp. Mal 3:1) by driving money changers and merchants selling animals for sacrifices out of the Temple. This cleansing was to restore true worship to the Temple. It was also symbolic of the judgment that Jesus had just pronounced against Israel (19:41-44).
