SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 24:50–53: Jesus went up to heaven

In this section Jesus blessed his followers, and then God took him up to heaven. This happened forty days after Jesus became alive again. Luke wrote about this same event in Acts 1:9–11.

Some examples of other headings for this section are:

Jesus Returns to Heaven (CEV)

Jesus Is Taken Up to Heaven (GNT)

The Ascension (NLT)

There are parallel passages for this section in Mark 16:19–20 and Acts 1:9–11.

24:52a

And they worshiped Him and

And they worshiped Him: There is a textual issue here. Some Greek manuscripts omit the words “they worshiped him and.” The RSV and REB are the only English versions on TW that follow these manuscripts. The NRSV includes the words, as well as the BSB, NIV, GNT, NJB, NET, GW, NLT, CEV, NCV, KJV, NASB, ESV, and JBP. The Greek NT gives the inclusion of the words a B rating, indicating that the text is almost certain. It has early and strong manuscript support. In Greek this clause is more literally, “and they having worshiped him.” It indicates that before they returned to Jerusalem (24:52b), they worshiped Jesus. They probably worshiped him while they were receiving his blessing and as a result of seeing him ascend into heaven. They may also have worshiped him because Jesus had helped them understand what the Scriptures said about himself (24:45–49).Marshall (p. 910) says, “The motif of an ascent leading to recognition of the divinity of the person involved is found in Hellenism…; see also Judges 13:20; Sirach 50:20–22, where the people bow in worship to receive the priestly blessing.” Bock (p. 1545–46) says, “Such worship is not surprising, given the exposition that has taken place and their increased understanding of Jesus’ role in God’s plan. It shows a key shift in the disciples’ appreciation of Jesus.”

Some other ways to connect this action to 24:51 are:

And they, after worshiping Him (NASB)

The disciples worshiped him and (GW)

So they worshiped him and (NET)

they worshiped Him: The Greek word that the BSB translates as worshiped refers to bowing, kneeling, or lying prostrate to worship and adore someone. It is a way to express reverence and respect. Some ways to translate this are:

Translate the action in a natural way in your language.

24:52b

returned to Jerusalem with great joy,

and returned to Jerusalem with great joy: This clause indicates that as the disciples returned to Jerusalem, they were very joyful. It implies that this joy was because of Jesus. They now knew that Jesus was really alive and had gone to God in heaven. They also believed his promise about giving them the power of the Holy Spirit to be his witnesses.

Some other ways to translate this clause are:

and returned to Jerusalem very happy (NCV)

and they were full of joy as they returned to Jerusalem

with great joy: The phrase with great joy refers to being extremely joyful and happy. In some languages there may be an idiom to refer to this type of great joy. For example:

full of joy

overjoyed

filled with great happiness/gladness

Describe this joy in a natural way in your language.

uW Translation Notes:

προσκυνήσαντες αὐτὸν

˓having˒_prostrated (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί αὐτοί προσκυνήσαντες αὐτόν ὑπέστρεψαν εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ μετά χαρᾶς μεγάλης)

Alternate translation: [after worshiping him there]

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

μετὰ χαρᾶς μεγάλης

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί αὐτοί προσκυνήσαντες αὐτόν ὑπέστρεψαν εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ μετά χαρᾶς μεγάλης)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind the abstract noun joy with an adverb such as “happily.” Alternate translation: [very happily]
