OET (OET-LV)And he said to them:
Be_collecting nothing more beside the thing having_been_directed to_you_all.

OET (OET-RV)“Don’t collect any extra on top of what you’ve been told to collect,” he said.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 3:1–20: John the Baptizer prepared the way for Jesus

The last event in Luke 2 describes Jesus’ trip to Jerusalem when he was twelve years old. This section begins about eighteen years later. At the beginning of chapter 3, both Jesus and John the Baptizer were about thirty years old. Both men were ready to begin public ministry.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some other possible headings for this section are:

The Preaching of John (NCV)

John the Baptist and Jesus (REB)

John the Baptizer tells people to prepare themselves for the Messiah

Parts of Luke 3:1–20 are basically the same as verses in Matthew 3:1–12. But Luke 3:1–2, 10–14, and 19–20 are not in Matthew.

Paragraph Group 3:10–14

In 3:10–14, three groups of people asked John the same question. They asked him what they should do. The three groups are:

  1. the crowd (3:10);

  2. tax collectors (3:12);

  3. soldiers (3:14).

3:13

“Collect no more than you are authorized,” he answered.

Collect no more than you are authorized: The clause Collect no more than you are authorized means “Do not take any more tax money from people than the law requires you to take.” The government rulers had made a law that the Jewish people must give them a certain amount of money. This was the amount that the tax collectors were required to collect.

Some other ways to translate this are:

Do not require/force people to pay more tax money than the law says they must pay.

Do not charge people more money than they owe the government in order to get money for yourselves.

he answered: The BSB places the phrase he answered at the end of this verse. Some versions place it at the beginning of the verse, where it occurs in the Greek. Place this phrase where it is natural in your language.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

μηδὲν πλέον & πράσσετε

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ Δέ εἶπεν πρός αὐτούς μηδέν πλέον παρά τό διατεταγμένον ὑμῖν Πράσσετε)

The implication is that tax collectors had been demanding more money than they should have been collecting. John tells them to stop doing that. Alternate translation: [Do not demand extra money]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

παρὰ τὸ διατεταγμένον ὑμῖν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ Δέ εἶπεν πρός αὐτούς μηδέν πλέον παρά τό διατεταγμένον ὑμῖν Πράσσετε)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form, and you could state who did the action. Alternate translation: [beyond what the Romans have authorized you to collect]

OET (OET-RV)“Don’t collect any extra on top of what you’ve been told to collect,” he said.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
