Section 4:14–30: The people rejected Jesus at Nazareth

In the synagogue in Nazareth, Jesus read a text from Isaiah that refers to the Messiah. Jesus said that what this scripture talked about was happening as he read it. By saying this, Jesus was claiming to be the Messiah. He used examples from the history of Israel to show that the Israelites did not believe and obey God well. He implied that people from other countries were ready to believe and obey God more than the people of Israel were. So the people of Nazareth tried to kill Jesus, but they could not.

But Jesus passed through the crowd and went on His way.

But: There is a contrast between 4:29 and 4:30. In 4:29, the people of Nazareth tried to kill Jesus, but 4:30 explains that they did not succeed. English versions indicate this contrast by translating the Greek conjunction at the beginning of the verse as But.

In your translation, indicate the contrast between these two verses in the way that is natural in your language.

Jesus passed through the crowd: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as Jesus passed through the crowd is literally “having gone through the middle of them.” Jesus passed through the middle of the crowd of people who were trying to push him over the cliff. The people did not hurt him as he moved through the crowd and then went away.

Some other ways to translate this are:

he walked through the middle of the crowd (GNT)

he passed right through the crowd (NLT)

Jesus slipped through the crowd (CEV)

Some scholars think that this was a miracle. Others think that Jesus was simply able to “slip away” or “escape” from the people. Luke did not say how Jesus was able to do this or why the people were unable to harm him.

In your translation, you may need to say first that “He/Jesus turned around,” so that the readers will know that he walked away from the cliff (see 4:30 in the Display).

went on His way: The Greek word that the BSB translates here as went on His way may also be translated as:

walked away (NJB)

went away (GW)

got away (CEV)

escaped

4:30 he passed right through the crowd: The main emphasis is on the sovereign majesty of Jesus. His time had not yet come (cp. John 7:30, 44; 8:20, 59). This attempt to kill Jesus anticipated his crucifixion, so his escape foreshadows his resurrection.
