SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 6:12–16: Jesus chose the twelve apostles

In this section, Luke changed his topic from enemies of Jesus to friends and followers of Jesus. Jesus chose twelve men from among his many followers to be his apostles. Before making this important decision, Jesus prayed all night and asked God to guide him. Jesus chose these twelve men in order to train them for leadership.

Some other possible headings for this section are:

Jesus Chooses His Twelve Apostles (CEV)

Jesus appointed the apostles

The Twelve Apostles (NIV)

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 10:1–4 and Mark 3:13–19.

6:13a

When daylight came, He called His disciples to Him

When daylight came: The phrase When daylight came introduces what Jesus did after praying all night. Some other ways to translate this are:

The next morning (CEV)

When it was day (GW)

He called His disciples to Him: The Greek word that the BSB translates as called…to Him is literally “summoned.” It implies that Jesus asked the disciples to gather around him in order to tell them something. He did this to announce the decision that he had made as a result of his night of praying.

disciples: The word disciples refers here to the larger group of Jesus’ followers. It was out of this larger group that Jesus called twelve disciples to be apostles.

This same word occurs in 6:1b. For translation advice, see the note on disciples at 5:30a. See also disciple in the Glossary.

6:13b

and chose twelve of them, whom He also designated as apostles:

and chose twelve of them: The Greek verb that the BSB translates as chose means “selected.” Jesus chose twelve men from among the group of his followers.

whom He also designated as apostles: The Greek verb that the BSB translates as designated is literally “named.” Some other ways to translate whom He also designated as apostles are:

whom he named apostles (NCV)

to be his apostles (CEV)

also: The Greek word that the BSB translates as also indicates an additional role. They were already disciples. Jesus also gave them the role of apostles.

apostles: The Greek word that English versions translate as apostles means “those who are sent.” It refers to the people whom someone sends with authority to accomplish a mission or a particular task.

Some ways to translate apostles are:

Be careful to choose different terms for “apostles,” “angels,” “elders,” and “prophets.”

See also apostle in the Glossary.

uW Translation Notes:

ὅτε ἐγένετο ἡμέρα

when ˱it˲_became day

Alternate translation: [the next morning]

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

ἐκλεξάμενος ἀπ’ αὐτῶν δώδεκα

˓having˒_chosen from them twelve

The pronoun them refers to the disciples. Alternate translation: [he chose 12 of those disciples]

οὓς καὶ ἀποστόλους ὠνόμασεν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ὅτε ἐγένετο ἡμέρα προσεφώνησεν τούς μαθητάς αὐτοῦ καί ἐκλεξάμενος ἀπʼ αὐτῶν δώδεκα οὕς καί ἀποστόλους ὠνόμασεν)

The term apostles comes from a Greek word that originally meant “messengers” or “delegates.” It took on a specialized meaning within the community of Jesus’ followers to mean the 12 men whom Jesus chose to be his authoritative representatives. Many languages have borrowed the Greek word to use in this sense. But if your language has developed its own special term for this role, use it in your translation. Alternate translation: [and he appointed them to be apostles]
