In the Old Testament, God commanded the Jewish people to rest on the seventh day of each week. They called this day the “Sabbath.” The Pharisees believed that Jewish people should not do any work at all on the Sabbath day. They made many strict rules about what people were not allowed to do on the Sabbath.
In this section, the Pharisees continued their disagreement with Jesus from Luke 5:33–39. The Pharisees questioned Jesus’ authority to change the old traditions. They focused on the laws and traditions concerning the Sabbath. Jesus stated and proved that he did indeed have greater authority than the Pharisees to decide what a person could do on the Sabbath. As a result, the Pharisees perceived Jesus as a threat to their own authority.

There are parallel passages in Matthew 12:1–14 and Mark 2:23–3:6.
In this paragraph, Luke described how Jesus allowed his disciples to pick and eat grain on the Sabbath. Some Pharisees saw the disciples doing that and rebuked Jesus. Jesus had not told his disciples to stop what they were doing. Therefore, the Pharisees felt that Jesus was not respecting their laws about the Sabbath day.
In response, Jesus reminded the Pharisees of a story about King David. He showed them that the way they thought about the Sabbath was wrong. He told them that he had the authority to decide what was right or wrong to do on the Sabbath.
Then Jesus declared, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
He/Jesus then said to them, “The Son of Man is master/ruler of the Sabbath day.”
Jesus finished by saying, “I, the Son of Man, have authority over what is right to do on the rest day.”
Then Jesus told them that he the Son of Man has authority over what people should and should not do on the day for resting.
Then Jesus declared: In 6:5 Jesus continued to speak, but his speech is introduced by the clause Then Jesus declared. This clause emphasizes Jesus’ conclusion to his story about David.
Use the expression that is used in your language when a teacher announces his conclusion. For example:

The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath: The Greek clause that the BSB translates as The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath is literally “Lord of Sabbath is the Son of Man.” The word Lord means “master” or “one who has authority,” and it is emphasized in this part of the verse.
In this context the word Lord refers to Jesus’ authority over the Sabbath day. Although the Sabbath was given by God, Jesus had authority over it. He had this right because he was the Son of Man, whom God sent. He had the right to decide what people could or could not do on the Sabbath day.
Some other ways to translate this are:
I…am master even of the Sabbath! (NLT96)
I…have authority over the rest day.
I…have the right to decide what a person can do on the day for resting.
I…have the authority to say what people are allowed to do on the rest day.
The Son of Man: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as The Son of Man is literally “the Son of the human/person.” It is a title that Jesus often used to refer to himself. It implies that:
he was a true human being, and he represented all people;
he came from God and had authority from God.
Try to use an expression that implies both meanings. Some expressions that translators have used are:
the Man whom God Sent
the True Man from God/Heaven
the Representative of Mankind
The Older Brother of All People
In some languages, it may be necessary to use a form like “I” or “me” to indicate that Jesus was referring to himself. For example:
me, the Son of Man
I who became man/human
This term first occurs in Luke at 5:24a. Translate it the same way in both places. See also the Son of Man in KBT.

The title Lord describes Jesus’ authority over the Sabbath. Alternate translation: [has authority over the Sabbath] or, if you translated in the first person, [have authority over the Sabbath]
6:5 Lord, even over the Sabbath: The saying is a play on words with a double meaning. First, son of man often means “human being,” so Jesus affirmed that the Sabbath was made to serve human beings. Son of Man was also a title for the Messiah (see Dan 7:13-14). Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath because he created it.
