SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 6:12–16: Jesus chose the twelve apostles

In this section, Luke changed his topic from enemies of Jesus to friends and followers of Jesus. Jesus chose twelve men from among his many followers to be his apostles. Before making this important decision, Jesus prayed all night and asked God to guide him. Jesus chose these twelve men in order to train them for leadership.

Some other possible headings for this section are:

Jesus Chooses His Twelve Apostles (CEV)

Jesus appointed the apostles

The Twelve Apostles (NIV)

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 10:1–4 and Mark 3:13–19.

6:14–16

Luke 6:14–16 lists the names of the twelve apostles. Use the most natural way in your language to give a list of names. If necessary, introduce the list in some way. For example:

The names of the twelve/apostles were

Here are their names:

6:14a

Simon, whom He named Peter,

Simon, whom He named Peter: Simon was Peter’s original name. This is the name that his parents gave him. But Jesus had also named him Peter when Jesus first met him (see John 1:42). After this, people sometimes called him Simon, sometimes Peter, and sometimes Simon Peter. Here, when Jesus chose the twelve apostles, Simon already had his other name, Peter.

Most English versions translate this with the simple past tense (“whom he named Peter”). However, you may want to translate it in a way that makes it clear that Jesus was not giving Simon the name Peter at that moment. For example:

Simon (whom he had named Peter)

Simon (whom he had already/previously named Peter)

Peter: The Greek word that the BSB transliterates as Peter means “stone” or “rock.” You may want to put this in a footnote. For example:

The name Peter means “rock” in Greek.

6:14b

and his brother Andrew; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew;

and his brother Andrew: Andrew was Simon’s younger brother. They had the same father and mother. Use a general term for brother if possible. If not, use a term for a younger brother.

James and John: James and John were the sons of Zebedee. They were mentioned in 5:10.

Philip and Bartholomew: This is the first mention of these two men in the Gospel of Luke. Bartholomew is also known as Nathanael. He and Philip were friends.

uW Translation Notes:

Σίμωνα & Πέτρον & Ἀνδρέαν & Ἰάκωβον & Ἰωάννην & Φίλιππον & Βαρθολομαῖον

Simon & Peter & Andrew & Jacobus & John & Philip & Bartholomew

These are seven men’s names. (The second name is a nickname for the first man.)

Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns

Ἀνδρέαν τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ

Andrew (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Σίμωνα ὅν καί ὠνόμασεν Πέτρον καί Ἀνδρέαν τόν ἀδελφόν αὐτοῦ καί Ἰάκωβον καί Ἰωάννην καί Φίλιππον καί Βαρθολομαῖον)

The pronoun his refers to Simon. Alternate translation: [Simon’s brother, Andrew]
