SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 6:17–49: Jesus taught people how to be his disciples

In this section, Jesus spoke about how his true disciples should think and act. He spoke about this immediately after he had chosen twelve of his disciples to be his apostles. Jesus said many things about this topic in his speech, so that people have often called this particular speech of Jesus a “sermon.”

In this sermon, Jesus asked those who heard him to be different from other people in the world and to think differently. He encouraged his disciples to obey his authority and live as people of God. They should be generous and merciful even to their enemies, as God is generous to everyone. Jesus assured his disciples that they would be blessed and rewarded for their obedience and for suffering for him. He concluded his speech by telling parables to motivate his disciples to obey his teaching.

Another possible heading for this section is:

The Sermon on the Plain (NET)

Some English versions divide 6:17–49 into several sections. Here is one way that might be done:

6:17–26 Blessings and woes

6:27–36 Love your enemies

6:37–42 Do not judge

6:43–45 A tree and its fruit

6:46–49 Two foundations

The sermon in 6:17–49 is similar to the sermon commonly referred to as “The Sermon on the Mount” in Matthew chapters 5–7.

Paragraph 6:17–19

This paragraph tells where Jesus was when he spoke the words in this section. It also tells when he spoke and who listened to what he said. It tells why the people had gathered together and what Jesus had been doing before he spoke to the crowd. The events in this paragraph occurred immediately after Jesus chose the twelve apostles in the previous paragraph.

6:18a

They had come to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases,

They had come to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases: There is disagreement about where 6:18 begins. (1) Some versions begin 6:18 with “who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases” (BSB, NIV, GNT, NRSV, NJB, ESV, NASB, GW, NLT, CEV, NCV). (2) Other versions include “who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases” in 6:17. These versions begin 6:18 with “Those troubled by evil spirits were cured” (NET, RSV, KJV, REB). You should follow the way the major language version in your area divides the verses here. This clause tells why the people were there waiting for Jesus. Some came to listen to Jesus teach. Others had come because they were sick and they wanted Jesus to heal them. Some probably came for both reasons. Some other ways to translate this are:

Many of the people had come to hear Jesus speak. Those who were sick had come for Jesus to heal them.

These people had come to listen to Jesus and to be healed of their diseases. (CEV)

and to be healed of their diseases: This phrase is passive. Some ways to translate it are:

6:18b

and those troubled by unclean spirits were healed.

and those troubled by unclean spirits were healed: The Greek word that the BSB translates as troubled is literally “to be afflicted” or “tormented.” Some other ways to translate this are:

he healed those who were troubled by evil spirits (NCV)

he healed the people whom evil spirits tormented

Different languages and cultures have different ways to speak about how unclean spirits control a person. Use the natural way your language and culture refers to unclean spirits controlling people.

unclean spirits: Some versions translate the Greek phrase that the BSB translates as unclean spirits as “evil spirits” (GNT, GW, NLT). Luke used the terms “unclean spirits,” “evil spirits,” and “demons” to refer to the same beings. You should use the same term here as you did in 4:36c.

Some ways to translate unclean spirit are:

See demon in the Glossary for more information.

healed: The word healed means that Jesus healed or freed people from the control of unclean spirits. Use the natural way your language and culture refer to people being freed from the control of unclean spirits.

In your translation, do not imply that Jesus healed only people who were controlled by unclean spirits. He healed everyone who came to him. Verse 6:19b makes this explicit. The CEV has one way to make this clear:

All who were troubled by evil spirits were also healed.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἰαθῆναι

˓to_be˒_healed

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form, and you could state who did the action. Alternate translation: [for Jesus to heal them]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

καὶ οἱ ἐνοχλούμενοι ἀπὸ πνευμάτων ἀκαθάρτων ἐθεραπεύοντο

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οἵ ἦλθον ἀκοῦσαι αὐτοῦ καί ἰαθῆναι ἀπό τῶν νόσων αὐτῶν Καί οἱ ἐνοχλούμενοι ἀπό πνευμάτων ἀκαθάρτων ἐθεραπεύοντο)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form, and you could state who did the action. Alternate translation: [Jesus also drove evil spirits out of the people they were controlling]
