OET (OET-LV)And the city the holy, Hierousalaʸm/(Yərūshālayim) the_new, I_saw coming_down out_of the heaven from the god, having_been_prepared as a_bride, having_been_adorned for_the husband of_her.

OET (OET-RV)Then I saw the chosen city—the new Jerusalem—coming down out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride all dressed up for her husband,

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 21:1–8: John saw the new heaven and earth

In this section, John saw a new heaven, a new earth, and a new Jerusalem. John also heard someone explain that God now lives with his people. The person also spoke about those who did not follow God.

Other examples of headings for this section are:

The new heaven and earth descended, and God began living with his people

All things made new (JBP)

21:2a

I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God,

I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem: There is a textual issue in 21:2a: (1) Early Greek manuscripts have the text I saw (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NASB, NLT, GW, CEV, NET, NABRE, REB, ESV, NCV). (2) A few later Greek manuscripts have the text I John saw (KJV only). It is recommended that you follow option (1), because the UBS Greek NT supports it. The new Jerusalem is the holy city because it belongs to God and God will live there. Here the word holy indicates that the city is dedicated for God’s use. Only his people will live there. Nothing evil will live there. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

I saw the City set apart for God, which is the new Jerusalem

I saw God’s special City. This is the new Jerusalem

coming down out of heaven from God: This phrase tells the reader more about the holy city. In some languages a literal translation would wrongly indicate that there are other holy cities and only this one was coming down out of heaven from God. If that is true in your language, translate this phrase so that it tells more about the Holy City. One way to do that is to start a new sentence here. For example:

The city came down from God in heaven.

heaven: Here the word heaven refers to the place where God lives.

21:2b

prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

prepared as a bride adorned for her husband: This phrase symbolically compares the new Jerusalem to a woman about to be married. Like a bride makes herself ready for the wedding, so the new Jerusalem is ready to marry.

In some languages it is more natural to translate 21:2b as a separate sentence. For example:

It was prepared like a bride dressed for her husband. (NCV)

prepared: Here the word prepared means “was made ready.” The city was ready in the way that a bride is ready to meet her husband. For example:

dressed like a bride ready for her husband (GW)

like a bride dressed in her wedding gown and ready to meet her husband. (CEV)

The clause is passive. Some languages must use an active clause. For example:

others/they made her ready

bride: This word refers to a woman who is about to marry.

adorned: The Greek word that the BSB literally translates as adorned refers to wearing a beautiful dress and jewelry. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

beautifully dressed (NIV)

made beautiful

her husband: Here the word husband refers to the man about to marry his bride.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἡτοιμασμένην ὡς νύμφην, κεκοσμημένην τῷ ἀνδρὶ αὐτῆς

˓having_been˒_prepared as ˓a˒_bride ˓having_been˒_adorned ˱for˲_the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί τήν πόλιν τήν ἁγίαν Ἰερουσαλήμ καινήν εἶδον καταβαίνουσαν ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἀπό τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡτοιμασμένην ὡς νύμφην κεκοσμημένην τῷ ἀνδρί αὐτῆς)

If your language does not use these passive forms, you could express the ideas in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you need to say who did the action, the context suggests that it was God. It may be helpful to begin a new sentence here. Alternate translation: [God had prepared the city the way a bride adorns herself for her husband]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

ἡτοιμασμένην ὡς νύμφην, κεκοσμημένην τῷ ἀνδρὶ αὐτῆς

˓having_been˒_prepared as ˓a˒_bride ˓having_been˒_adorned ˱for˲_the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί τήν πόλιν τήν ἁγίαν Ἰερουσαλήμ καινήν εἶδον καταβαίνουσαν ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἀπό τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡτοιμασμένην ὡς νύμφην κεκοσμημένην τῷ ἀνδρί αὐτῆς)

The point of this comparison is that the city looked beautiful, just as a bride makes herself beautiful to please her husband on their wedding day. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this point explicitly. It may be helpful to begin a new sentence here. Alternate translation: [God had made the city beautiful, just as a bride makes herself beautiful for her husband on their wedding day]
