Section 21:1–8: John saw the new heaven and earth

In this section, John saw a new heaven, a new earth, and a new Jerusalem. John also heard someone explain that God now lives with his people. The person also spoke about those who did not follow God.

The one who overcomes will inherit all things, and I will be his God, and he will be My son: Here the words The one, his, he, and son refer to every man and woman who overcomes. For example:

The person who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my child

Those who win the victory will receive this from me: I will be their God, and they will be my children. (GNT)

overcomes: This word means “triumphs” or “obtains/wins victory.” Here the word refers to having success over sin, evil, and pressure to turn away from Jesus. Other ways to translate this word are:

conquers (RSV)

are victorious (NLT)

Some languages need to say what a believer overcomes. If that is true in your language, you should refer generally to “evil” or “sin.” For example:

defeat evil

has victory over sin

conquers anything that causes a believer to stumble

inherit: Here the Greek word that the BSB translates as inherit refers to a person being given something because it has been promised to him. Here it refers to beginning to live in the new Jerusalem and receiving all the other blessings that God promised to those who believe in Jesus. Other ways to translate this are:

take as your heritage

receiveIn some languages “take” and “receive” is translated by the same verb. The English verb “receive” implies that someone gave the inheritance, but the English verb “take” does not imply that. Your translation should imply or indicate that someone gave it.

will be given (CEV)

all things: There is a textual issue in 21:7a: (1) Early Greek manuscripts have the word these (RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NASB, NLT, GW, CEV, NET, NABRE, REB, ESV, NCV). (2) A few late Greek manuscripts have the word all (KJV only). It is recommended that you follow option (1), because the UBS Greek NT supports it. The BSB uses the phrase “all things,” but the Greek text for the translation has the word “these.” The Greek word is literally “these (things).” It refers to the promises in 21:1–6. Since it refers back, in some languages it is more natural to use “that” or “those” here. For example:

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὁ νικῶν κληρονομήσει ταῦτα καί ἔσομαι αὐτῷ Θεός καί αὐτός ἔσται μοί υἱός)

The one conquering does not refer to a specific person. It refers to anyone who conquers in the sense that Jesus uses that term in the letters to the seven churches and as John uses it in [20:11](../20/11.md). Express this in the way that would be most natural in your language. Alternate translation: [Everyone who conquers]

Although the term son is masculine, God is using the word in a generic sense that includes both men and women. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could use a term in your language that is clearly inclusive of both men and women. Alternate translation: [I will be the God of that person, and that person will be my child]

21:7 All who are victorious: God’s children who persevere in life will inherit his blessings. Adoption is a covenant relationship; the language of adoption certifies their privileges and responsibilities (cp. Gen 17:8; 2 Sam 7:14-16; Jer 31:33; Ezek 34:24).
