In this section, John saw a new heaven, a new earth, and a new Jerusalem. John also heard someone explain that God now lives with his people. The person also spoke about those who did not follow God.

a loud voice from the throne saying: There is a textual issue in 21:3a: (1) Some early Greek manuscripts have the words the throne (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NASB, NLT, GW, CEV, NET, NABRE, REB, ESV, NCV). (2) Some later Greek manuscripts have the word heaven (KJV only). It is recommended that you follow option (1), because the UBS Greek NT supports it. John does not say who spoke here, but it probably does not refer to God (21:3b) Translate this phrase so that it refers to someone other than God. For example:

the throne: This word refers to the official chair of a king. It is a symbol of his power to rule. See how you translated throne in 1:4 or 19:5.
“Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man, and He will dwell with them.
“Look/Listen, God’s place to live is now with people, and he will live with them.
“Indeed/Hey, the place where God lives is now with people. He will certainly live with them.
Behold: The Greek word is literally “Look.” The Greek word emphasizes or calls attention to the words that follow. It is not a command to look at something. Other ways to translate this word are:

Listen,
the dwelling place of God is with man, and He will dwell with them: These two clauses have similar meanings. In Greek, repeating clauses of similar meaning emphasizes that meaning.
In some languages repeating a similar meaning has a different use. If that is true in your language, you may want to emphasize the meaning in a different way. For example:
God will indeed dwell with people
God will certainly live with humankind
dwelling place: This word refers to a place to live. Here it refers to where God lives.
man: Here this word refers to people in general.
They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them as their God.
They will be his people, and he himself will be there with them and will be their God.
They will belong to him. God himself will live among them. He will be their God.
They will be His people: The people will have a relationship with God. They will belong to God.
God Himself will be with them: This clause indicates that God will actually be present among them; it will not just be a symbolic representation of him, as the temple in Jerusalem represented his presence.
as their God: There is a textual issue here:
Some Greek manuscripts include the words and be their God. For example:
God himself will be with them, and he will be their God (GNT) (BSB. NIV, GNT, NJB, NRSV, GW, NCV, ESV, KJV)
Some Greek manuscripts omit those words. For example:
God himself will be with them; (RSV) (RSV, NASB, NLT, CEV, NET, REB)
It is recommended that you follow option (1).The UBS Greek NT support option (1), but indicates that the committee had difficulty deciding which option was best. But if the major language version follows option (2), you may want to follow that.

These two phrases mean similar things. John is using repetition to emphasize the idea that the phrases express. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could combine them. Alternate translation: [God will now tabernacle right in the midst of men]

John is using a noun and a verb from the same root together for emphasis. You may be able to do the same thing in your own language. Alternate translation: [The house of God is with men, and he will house with them]

Although the term men is masculine, John is using the word in a generic sense that includes both men and women. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could use a term in your language that is clearly inclusive of both men and women. Alternate translation: [people]

Some ancient manuscripts read, God himself will be with them. ULT follows that reading. Other ancient manuscripts add “as their God.” If a translation of the Bible exists in your region, you may wish to use the reading that it uses. If a translation of the Bible does not exist in your region, you may wish to use the reading of ULT.
21:3 God’s home is now among his people! Old and New Testament expectations are fully and finally realized. Ever since humanity sinned (Gen 3), separation from God has been humanity’s greatest problem (Gen 3:23). God has repeatedly called his people to himself through the prophets, through Jesus his Son, and through the presence of the Spirit (see Gen 17:8; Exod 29:45-46; Pss 46:4-5; 95:7; Jer 7:23; 31:33; Ezek 34:14; 37:27; Zech 8:8; John 14:2-3; 17:24). In the new heaven and new earth, God’s people will finally experience ultimate and everlasting fellowship with God.
