Section 21:9–22:5: An angel showed the new Jerusalem to John

In this section, an angel showed the new Jerusalem to John. The angel again used a metaphor of a bride to describe new Jerusalem. The city was large and beautiful. God lived there with his people. His glory lighted the city. John described the city, the river that flowed through the city, and the tree that gave life. There were no bad things in the city at all.

The wall was made of jasper,

jasper: This word refers to a spotted or veined stone of a variety of colors. It is often a reddish color, but can also be deep green, brown, or deep yellow. See how you translated this word in 21:11.

21:18b

and the city itself of pure gold, as pure as glass.

the city itself of pure gold: This phrase indicates that everything in the city was made of pure gold. This would include the buildings and at least the main street (21:21b).

pure gold: The word pure refers to something without dirt or blemish. The gold had nothing else in it.

as pure as glass: There are two ways to interpret the Greek word that the BSB translates as pure:

  1. The phrase indicates that the gold is very pure. For example:

    as pure as glass (NCV) (BSB, NIV, REB, NCV)

  2. The phrase indicates the gold is see-through. For example:

    as clear as glass (GNT) (RSV, GNT, NJB, NASB, NABRE, NLT, GW, CEV, NET, ESV, KJV)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1), because the word pure should be understood in the same way here as in the phrase “pure gold.”BDAG and other Greek dictionaries list the meanings as “clean, pure.” The meaning “clear/transparent” is not a part of the meaning of the Greek word. Beale (page 1079), Lenski (page 639), Hughes (on TW), and Swete (page 290) support interpretation (1). Other ways to translate this phrase are:

with the brilliance of glass (JBP)

bright as clear glass (REB)

The Greek word also means “clean.” John probably implies that the city is acceptable to God. The Jews and Jesus used the word “clean” in the same way (Matthew 23:26, Luke 11:41, John 13:10) The gold of the city is completely without dirt or blemish. For example:

The point of this comparison is that the gold from which the city was made was clear and bright, just as pure glass has no imperfections that keep it from reflecting light or letting light through. Alternate translation: [is gold that is as clear and bright as pure glass]

21:18 The wall is built of jasper (see study note on 21:11; cp. 4:3). The city is fashioned in gold, which is not opaque like earthly gold; rather, like God’s transformed people, the heavenly gold is clear and pure.
