OET (OET-LV) and_ Yōʼāⱱ _he_answered and_he_said far_be_it far_be_it to_me if I_will_swallow_up and_if I_will_destroy.
Note 1 topic: writing-quotations
וַיַּ֥עַן יוֹאָ֖ב וַיֹּאמַ֑ר
(Some words not found in UHB: and,he_answered Yōʼāⱱ/(Joab) and,he_said far,be_it far,be_it to=me if swallow_up and=if destroy )
The expression and said introduces a direct quotation. In your translation, use a natural way of introducing direct quotations in your language. It may not be necessary to represent this expression explicitly. Alternate translation: [And Joab responded]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
חָלִ֤ילָה חָלִ֨ילָה֙ לִ֔י אִם־אֲבַלַּ֖ע וְאִם־אַשְׁחִֽית
far,be_it far,be_it to=me if (Some words not found in UHB: and,he_answered Yōʼāⱱ/(Joab) and,he_said far,be_it far,be_it to=me if swallow_up and=if destroy )
Joab is using a common expression of his culture to express his horror at the idea he describes. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation. If you have already translated the book of 1 Samuel, see how you translated the similar expression in [1 Samuel 2:30](../../1sa/02/30.md). Alternate translation: [Far be it, far be it from me to devour or to destroy!]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / reduplication
חָלִ֤ילָה חָלִ֨ילָה֙ לִ֔י
far,be_it far,be_it to=me
Joab is repeating the word Profane in order to intensify his expression of the idea that it conveys. If your language can repeat words for intensification, it would be appropriate to do that here in your translation. If not, your language may have another way of expressing the intensification. Alternate translation: [Absolutely profane to me] or [Be it far away from me]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism
אִם־אֲבַלַּ֖ע וְאִם־אַשְׁחִֽית
if (Some words not found in UHB: and,he_answered Yōʼāⱱ/(Joab) and,he_said far,be_it far,be_it to=me if swallow_up and=if destroy )
These two phrases if I should devour and if I should destroy mean basically the same thing. The second emphasizes the meaning of the first by repeating the same idea with different words. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could combine them and express the emphasis in another way. Alternate translation: [if I should completely destroy]
OET (OET-LV) and_ Yōʼāⱱ _he_answered and_he_said far_be_it far_be_it to_me if I_will_swallow_up and_if I_will_destroy.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
Acknowledgements: The Hebrew text, lemmas, and morphology are all thanks to the OSHB and some of the glosses are from Macula Hebrew.
