15:3 The heart of the Good News is that Christ died for our sins (see Rom 3:24-25; 5:8-10; Gal 1:4; 1 Thes 5:9-10).

SOTNSIL Open Translation Notes:

Section 15:1–58: Believers will rise from the dead

In this section Paul reminded the Corinthian believers about the gospel and showed them that the resurrection from the dead was an important part of the gospel. First (15:1–11) he wrote about the evidence showing that God raised Christ from the dead. Then (15:12–34) he taught that God will raise believers from the dead. Finally (15:35–58) he taught about what the resurrection body will be like.

Here are some other possible section headings:

The resurrection

People who die will live again

Christ has risen and his people will rise also

Paragraph 15:3–8

In this paragraph Paul reminded the Corinthians of four important events that form the gospel message:

15:3a

For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance:

For: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as For introduces an explanation of what Paul said in 15:1–2. Translate it in a way that is natural in your language to introduce an explanation.

what I received I passed on to you: This clause introduces a summary of four historical events that are central to the Christian faith. Paul said that he heard this story from others, and he then told it to the Corinthians. The wording is very similar to 11:23a.

received: Paul received the gospel message from other believers.

Here are some other ways to translate this clause:

I handed on to you the message that I received

the message that they/other people told me, I also told to you

as of first importance: There are two ways to interpret the Greek phrase that the BSB translates as as of first importance:

  1. It means “most important.” For example:

the most important points (GW) (BSB, GW, NIV, NASB, RSV, ESV, NET, NLT, NCV, NABRE, GNT, CEV)

  2. It means “first in time.” For example:

in the first place (NJB) (NJB, KJV)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1). This is supported by the majority of English versions and commentaries.See, for example, Fee p. 722; and Thiselton p. 1186.

15:3b-5

that…that…that…and that: Paul listed four points that make up the gospel message. In Greek, each of the four points is introduced by a word often translated as that. The points are connected to each other by a conjunction usually translated as and. The NJB is an example of an English version that stays close to the Greek:

3bthat Christ died for our sins, in accordance with the scriptures, 4and that he was buried; and that on the third day, he was raised to life, in accordance with the scriptures; 5and that he appeared to Cephas… (NJB)

The BSB uses the word and to connect only the last item in the list. Translate these conjunctions in a way that is natural in your language to connect four facts.

15:3b

that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,

that: The word that introduces the first of the four events that form the gospel message.

Christ died for our sins: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as for our sins is more literally “because of our sins” or “on account of our sins.” Christ died for the wrong things that we have done.

Here is another way to translate this phrase:

Christ died because we(incl) sinned

according to the Scriptures: The phrase according to the Scriptures indicates that the Old Testament Scriptures say that Christ was going to die for the sins of the people.See, for example, Isaiah 53.

Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:

as is written in the Scriptures

as the Scriptures say it will happen

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

παρέδωκα & ὑμῖν ἐν πρώτοις

˱I˲_gave_over & ˱to˲_you_all in ˓the˒_first_‹place›

Here Paul speaks as if the gospel that he preached to the Corinthians were a physical object that he delivered to them. By speaking in this way, he emphasizes that he truly taught the Corinthians the gospel, and they now know it as well as if they held it in their hands. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this figure of speech with a comparable metaphor or express the idea plainly. Alternate translation: [I instructed you among the first in] or [I handed over to you among the first]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἐν πρώτοις

in ˓the˒_first_‹place›

Here, among the first could mean that: (1) what Paul is about to say is one of the first things he told them when he visited Corinth. Alternate translation: [as one of the first things I said] (2) what Paul is about to say is one of the most important things he told them when he visited Corinth. Alternate translation: [as one of the most important things I said]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / extrainfo

ὃ καὶ παρέλαβον

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: παρέδωκα Γάρ ὑμῖν ἐν πρώτοις ὅ καί παρέλαβον ὅτι Χριστός ἀπέθανεν ὑπέρ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν ἡμῶν κατά τάς Γραφάς)

Here Paul does not clarify from whom he received this information. In [11:23](../11/23.md), which uses very similar words, Paul says that he “received” things “from the Lord.” Here, then, it is likely that he also received what he is about to say “from the Lord.” However, he may also mean that he received this specific way of expressing the good news from another human being. Since Paul avoids stating from whom he received what he is about to say, you should also try to avoid stating it. If you must state whom he received it from, you could refer to “the Lord” or generally to people. Alternate translation: [what I also received from the Lord] or [what I also received from others]

ὑπὲρ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν ἡμῶν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: παρέδωκα Γάρ ὑμῖν ἐν πρώτοις ὅ καί παρέλαβον ὅτι Χριστός ἀπέθανεν ὑπέρ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν ἡμῶν κατά τάς Γραφάς)

Alternate translation: [in order to deal with our sins]

Note 4 topic: writing-quotations

κατὰ τὰς Γραφάς

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: παρέδωκα Γάρ ὑμῖν ἐν πρώτοις ὅ καί παρέλαβον ὅτι Χριστός ἀπέθανεν ὑπέρ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν ἡμῶν κατά τάς Γραφάς)

In Paul’s culture, according to was a normal way to introduce a reference to an important text. In this case, Paul does not state exactly which part of the Scriptures he has in mind but rather refers to the Scriptures as a whole. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express how Paul introduces the quotation with a comparable phrase that indicates that Paul is referring to an important text. Alternate translation: [as the Scriptures say] or [as can be read in the Scriptures]
