15:1-58 Some people in the church had doubts about a future resurrection of the dead. Paul reassures them and, perhaps in response to their skeptical questions, discusses the nature of a resurrection body.
The Resurrection of the Dead
Jesus spoke of a future resurrection of all people—either to eternal life or to judgment (Mark 12:26-27; John 5:28-29; 6:39-40, 44, 54; 11:25-26; cp. Luke 20:34-36). When Christ returns, all his people will be resurrected to be with him forever (1 Thes 4:13-18; cp. 2 Cor 5:1-10).
This strong hope characterized the outlook of the early Christians. They were able to endure their suffering because their eyes were fixed on what lay beyond this life (2 Cor 4:16-18; cp. Heb 12:2). They expected Jesus to return and resurrect their bodies, and they looked forward to living with him forever (1 Pet 1:3-6, 23). Their faith was based on the foundation of Jesus’ own bodily resurrection (1 Cor 15:12-20; Acts 4:33; see also 2 Cor 4:14).
Resurrection bodies will be fundamentally different from the bodies we experience in this life, with all of their limitations and failings. These renewed bodies will be glorious, strong, immortal, and spiritual, like Christ’s own resurrection body (1 Cor 15:35-58).
Because they are already joined to Christ, believers actually begin to experience resurrection existence here and now. They have already been “raised” with Christ; they have already been given “resurrection life” (Rom 6:4-11; 8:10-11; Col 2:12). As a result, their lives are now centered in the spiritual realities of heaven rather than in worldly things (Col 3:1-4). Believers can experience the transforming power of that new life here and now, the new life of the Spirit that frees them from the power of sin and death (Rom 8:1-4). In all the difficulties they face, their trust is not in themselves but in the resurrection power of God (2 Cor 1:9).

In this section Paul reminded the Corinthian believers about the gospel and showed them that the resurrection from the dead was an important part of the gospel. First (15:1–11) he wrote about the evidence showing that God raised Christ from the dead. Then (15:12–34) he taught that God will raise believers from the dead. Finally (15:35–58) he taught about what the resurrection body will be like.

In this paragraph Paul used the same style of argument he used in 15:12–19. He claimed that to deny the resurrection takes away meaning from one’s present life. If there is no resurrection we might just as well concentrate on enjoying the pleasures of this life. He gave two examples. If there is no resurrection, then there is no reason for people to be baptized for the dead. Nor is there any reason for people to endanger themselves for Christ.

I face death every day: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as I face death every day is more literally “every day I die.” Paul was often in danger of dying. He did not actually die and come back to life every day. Paul spoke this way to emphasize his argument.

brothers: There is a textual issue:
Some Greek manuscripts include the word brothers. (BSB, NIV, NASB, RSV, ESV, REB, GW, NLT, NCV, NABRE, GNT)
Some Greek manuscripts do not include the word brothers. (NJB, NET, CEV, KJV)
It is recommended that you follow option (1).The UBS Greek New Testament, 4th edition, includes the word “brothers” with a C rating, indicating that “the Committee had difficulty in deciding which variant to place in the text.”
When Paul said brothers he was speaking to all the believers in Corinth, both men and women.
as surely as I boast about you: This Greek phrase is more literally “by [my] glorying in you.” Paul swore by his pride in the Corinthians. There are two ways to interpret what this means:
Paul said that he was certain that he died every day. He compared it to the certainty of his pride in the Corinthians. For example:
This is as sure as my boasting in you (NET) (BSB, NET, NIV, NCV, NLT, NJB, REB, NRSV)
Paul said that his pride in the Corinthians made him write about his suffering. For example:
The pride I have in you…makes me declare this (GNT) (GNT, NABRE, CEV)
It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1). This is followed by several English versions and supported by several commentaries.See, for example, Fee p. 769–770; and Thiselton p. 1250–1252.
Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:
I swear by my pride in you that it is true
That is true, brothers and sisters, just as it is true that I brag about you (NCV)
That is true. It is also true that I boast about you
I boast about you in Christ Jesus our Lord: The phrase I boast about you indicates that Paul boasted about, or took pride in, the Corinthian believers. He boasted that they believed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:
I boast about you because you follow Christ Jesus our Lord
my pride in what Christ Jesus our Lord has done in you (NLT)
In some languages it may be natural to reverse the order of these clauses. For example:

Here Paul speaks as if he “dies” every day. Paul does not experience death every single day, but he speaks in this way to emphasize that he could die at many different times. He speaks in this way to emphasize how often he experiences danger and risks losing his life. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind I die every day plainly and include the emphasis in another way. Alternate translation: [I face death all the time] or [I am in danger of dying very often]

The phrase by the is an oath formula. Use a natural way in your language to express an oath. Here, by introduces a person or thing that a person swears by to prove the truth of a claim. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express by with a word or phrase that introduces an oath or a strong claim to truth. Alternate translation: [which is as true as the boasting in you] or [which I promise is as true as the boasting in you]

Although brothers is in masculine form, Paul is using it to refer to any believer, whether man or woman. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express brothers with a non gendered word or refer to both genders. Alternate translation: [brothers and sisters]

Here Paul uses the spatial metaphor in Christ Jesus our Lord to describe the union of believers with Christ. In this case, being in Christ, or united to Christ, identifies Paul’s boasting as something that only matters or is valid in his union with Christ. Alternate translation: [in union with Christ Jesus our Lord] or [because I am united to Christ Jesus our Lord]
