NET Joshua and the Israelites almost totally wiped them out, but some survivors did escape to the fortified cities.

FBV So Joshua and the Israelites totally defeated them, striking them down and killing them. Only a few of them survived to escape back to their towns.

T4T So Joshua’s army did what he told them to do. They killed almost all of the enemy soldiers, but a few of them were able to reach their cities and be safe inside the walls of the cities.

   (Therefore when the adversaries were beaten with great vengeance, and were almost wasted till to death, they that might flee Israel, entered in to the strengthened cities.)

Luth Und da Josua und die Kinder Israel vollendet hatten diese sehr große Schlacht an ihnen und gar geschlagen: was überblieb von ihnen, das kam in die festen Städte.
   (And there Yosua and the children Israel completed had this/these very large battle(n) at/to to_them and even beaten: what/which remained from to_them, the came in the firm cities.)

ClVg Cæsis ergo adversariis plaga magna, et usque ad internecionem pene consumptis, hi qui Israël effugere potuerunt, ingressi sunt civitates munitas.
   (Cæsis therefore adversariis stroke/wound big, and until to extermination almost/nearly spents, these who/which Israel effugere they_could, having_entered are cities security. )
