ULTAnd he said to the messengers of Ben Hadad, “Say to my master the king, ‘All that you sent to your servant at the first I will do, but this thing I am not able to do.’ ” And the messengers went and returned him word.

USTSo Ahab said to Ben Hadad’s messengers, “Tell the king that I agree to give him the things that he first requested, but I do not agree to allow his officials to take anything that they want from my palace and from the houses of my officials.” So the messengers reported that to King Ben Hadad, and they returned with another message from Ben Hadad.

20:7-9 When Ben-hadad’s second delegation made even greater demands (see 1 Sam 11:1-2), Ahab recognized that Ben-hadad seemed bent on war. Ahab repeated his compliance with Ben-hadad’s first demand but rejected the second.
• my lord the king: Ahab addressed Ben-hadad in polite diplomatic terms, conceding his willingness to accept the Aramean king’s rule. Perhaps he hoped that his courteous reply would still avoid military confrontation.
