20:26-27 A number of circumstances could render a person ceremonially unclean and thus unfit for attending a sacred festival (see Lev 7:20-21). Often, an unclean person was required to be excluded from such functions only until the evening of the same day (Lev 15). This explains why Saul became suspicious after David did not arrive the next day.
• Saul referred to David as the son of Jesse (also in 1 Sam 20:31; 22:7), a description that functioned as David’s surname.

Saul could have referred to David by his name, or he could have respectfully called him “my son-in-law.” But he seems to call him the son of Jesse in front of his guests in order to suggest that David is of lowly origin and should not take for granted the opportunity to dine at the king’s table. So we recommend that you do not use the name David in place of the phrase Saul uses. It may be possible to represent this phrase in such a way as to indicate Saul’s tone and intention.
