BrTrAnd thou shalt deal mercifully with thy servant; for thou hast brought thy servant into a covenant of the Lord with thyself: and if there is iniquity in thy servant, slay me thyself; but why dost thou thus bring me to thy father?

ULTThen you shall do covenant faithfulness with your servant. For you have brought your servant into a covenant of Yahweh with you. But if there is iniquity in me, kill me yourself. For why this, that should you bring me to your father?”

USTIf that is true, then you must protect me. You indicated you would do that when you promised, with Yahweh as your witness, that you and I would always be good friends. But if I deserve to die for something very wrong that I have done, then you should kill me yourself. You do not need to make your father kill me.”

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

וְעָשִׂ֤יתָ חֶ֨סֶד֙ עַל־עַבְדֶּ֔ךָ כִּ֚י בִּבְרִ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה הֵבֵ֥אתָ אֶֽת־עַבְדְּךָ֖ עִמָּ֑ךְ

and,deal kindly on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in servant_of,your that/for/because/then/when in/on/at/with,covenant_of YHWH brought DOM servant_of,your with,you

If it would be more natural in your language, you could reverse the order of these phrases, since the second phrase gives the reason for the result that the first phrase describes. Alternate translation: [Then, since you have brought your servant into a covenant of Yahweh with you, you shall do covenant faithfulness with your servant]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person

וְעָשִׂ֤יתָ חֶ֨סֶד֙ עַל־עַבְדֶּ֔ךָ כִּ֚י & הֵבֵ֥אתָ אֶֽת־עַבְדְּךָ֖

and,deal kindly on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in servant_of,your that/for/because/then/when & brought DOM servant_of,your

David is speaking humbly about himself in the third person. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate this in the first person. Alternate translation: [Then you shall do covenant faithfulness with me, your servant. For you have brought me]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

וְעָשִׂ֤יתָ חֶ֨סֶד֙ עַל־עַבְדֶּ֔ךָ

and,deal kindly on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in servant_of,your

The term translated as covenant faithfulness describes the obligations of a relationship. Every person has a general obligation to treat any other person generously and helpfully. That is the context in [15:6](../15/06.md), where the ULT translates this term as “kindness.” Here the context is more specific. David is reminding Jonathan that he has made a covenant with him, and the term refers to the obligations of that covenant. Alternate translation: [Then you must be faithful to your covenant with me]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וְעָשִׂ֤יתָ חֶ֨סֶד֙ עַל־עַבְדֶּ֔ךָ

and,deal kindly on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in servant_of,your

As [18:4](../18/04.md) indicates, Jonathan’s covenant with David included a pledge to protect him. Alternate translation: [Then you must be faithful to your covenant with me and protect me]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

בִּבְרִ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה

in/on/at/with,covenant_of YHWH

David is using this possessive form to express the idea of a sworn covenant for which Yahweh has served as the witness. Alternate translation: [into a sworn covenant that Yahweh has witnessed]

Note 6 topic: grammar-connect-logic-contrast

וְאִם־יֶשׁ־בִּ֤י עָוֺן֙

and=if there_is in/on/at/with,me guilt

David is using the term But to introduce a contrast between what Jonathan should do if he considers him innocent and what he should do if he considers him guilty of doing something worthy of death. In your translation, indicate this contrast in a way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [But if you really think that there is iniquity in me]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

וְעַד־אָבִ֖יךָ לָמָּה־זֶּ֥ה תְבִיאֵֽנִי

and=unto I_will_show=you(ms) to/for=what this bring,me

David is using the question form for emphasis. If a speaker of your language would not use the question form for that purpose, you could translate this as a statement or as an exclamation. Alternate translation: [There is no need for you to bring me to your father!]
