UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / pronouns

וַֽיַּעֲבֹ֞ר בְּכָל

(Some words not found in UHB: and,he_passed in=all tribes_of Yisrael to,Abel and, -maˊₐkāh and=all the,Berites and, and=they_came also/though after,him )

The pronoun he refers to Sheba. It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. Alternate translation: [And Sheba passed through]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole

בְּכָל־שִׁבְטֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל

(Some words not found in UHB: and,he_passed in=all tribes_of Yisrael to,Abel and, -maˊₐkāh and=all the,Berites and, and=they_came also/though after,him )

The author says all of the tribes of Israel as an overstatement for emphasis. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different way to express the emphasis. Alternate translation: [the territory of Israel all the way to its northern boundary]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / hendiadys

אָבֵ֛לָה וּבֵ֥ית מַעֲכָ֖ה

to,Abel and, -maˊₐkāh

The phrase Abel and Beth Maacah identifies a single place. The name Beth Maacah tells which specific city of Abel this was, since there were several cities by that name in Israel. The author uses the expression “Abel Beth Maacah” in the next verse, and you may wish to use that name here as well. You could also reflect how the author is identifying this city. Alternate translation: [to the city of Abel, that is, the one in Beth Maacah]

Note 4 topic: writing-background

וְכָל־הַבֵּרִ֑ים & וַיִּקָּ֣הֲל֔וּ וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ אַף־אַחֲרָֽיו

and=all (Some words not found in UHB: and,he_passed in=all tribes_of Yisrael to,Abel and, -maˊₐkāh and=all the,Berites and, and=they_came also/though after,him )

The author is providing background information to help readers understand what happens next in the story. Because Sheba had the support of these troops, Joab and his soldiers had to mount a protracted siege against the city he was in. In your translation, introduce this information in a way that would be natural in your own language and culture.

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole

וְכָל־הַבֵּרִ֑ים

and=all (Some words not found in UHB: and,he_passed in=all tribes_of Yisrael to,Abel and, -maˊₐkāh and=all the,Berites and, and=they_came also/though after,him )

The author says all of the Berites as a generalization. He is referring specifically to the fighting men among the Berites. It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. Alternate translation: [And all of the Berite soldiers]

Note 6 topic: translate-names

הַבֵּרִ֑ים

(Some words not found in UHB: and,he_passed in=all tribes_of Yisrael to,Abel and, -maˊₐkāh and=all the,Berites and, and=they_came also/though after,him )

This could be the name of: (1) the people who lived in and around the city of Beroth in the tribe of Benjamin. They may have supported and accompanied Sheba since he was from their tribe. Alternate translation: [the soldiers from the area of Beroth]; (2) some other people group in northern Israel that is otherwise unknown. Alternate translation: [the soldiers of the Berite people group]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ אַף־אַחֲרָֽיו

(Some words not found in UHB: and,he_passed in=all tribes_of Yisrael to,Abel and, -maˊₐkāh and=all the,Berites and, and=they_came also/though after,him )

The author is speaking as if the Berites actually came after their leader, Sheba, in the sense of physically following behind him. He means that they joined his cause and accepted his leadership. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and they were also following him as their leader]
