OET (OET-LV)Watch, the scoffers, and wonder and be_perishing, because I am_doing a_work in the days of_you_all, a_work which by_no_means you_all_may_ not _believe, if someone may_be_describing_in_detail it to_you_all.

OET (OET-RV) ‘Watch you scoffers, and be amazed and die because I’m doing something special during your time.
⇔ Even if someone described it clearly to you all, you still might not believe it.’ ”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / quotemarks

ἴδετε, οἱ καταφρονηταί, καὶ θαυμάσατε καὶ ἀφανίσθητε, ὅτι ἔργον ἐργάζομαι ἐγὼ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ὑμῶν, ἔργον ὃ οὐ μὴ πιστεύσητε, ἐάν τις ἐκδιηγῆται ὑμῖν

watch ¬the scoffers and wonder and /be/_perishing because /a/_work /am/_doing I in the days ˱of˲_you_all /a/_work which by_no_means not ˱you_all˲_/may/_believe if someone /may_be/_describing_in_detail_‹it› ˱to˲_you_all

This quotation is from the prophet Habakkuk. Even if your language does not customarily put one direct quotation inside another, it would be good to present this quotation from Habakkuk as a direct quotation if possible, since God is addressing the Israelites directly in it. You may be able to indicate its beginning with an opening second-level quotation mark or with some other punctuation or convention that your language could use to indicate the start of a second-level quotation. You may also be able to use special formatting to set off the quotation, as ULT does.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

ἴδετε

watch

Paul is using the term Look to mean “Be careful,” since looking around altertly is associated with being careful. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “Be careful”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἀφανίσθητε

/be/_perishing

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “perish”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

ἔργον ἐργάζομαι & ἔργον

/a/_work /am/_doing & /a/_work

God is using the word work to mean a judgment that he will work to bring about. Alternate translation: “I am carrying out a judgment … a judgment”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ὑμῶν

in the days ˱of˲_you_all

God is using the term days to refer to a specific time. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “during your lifetime”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

13:16-41 Paul accepted the invitation, motioned to quiet his audience (cp. 19:33; 21:40), and launched into a straightforward proclamation of the Good News. This is Paul’s first great speech in Acts, and it provides a model of his preaching to a Jewish audience (see 22:1-21).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the SR-GNT.
