OET (OET-RV) who found favour with God and requested to find a tent for the house of Yacob,

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

εὑρεῖν

/to/_find

Stephen is speaking. David did not ask God if he could go look for this dwelling. David asked God if he could build it. Alternate translation: “to build”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / pronouns

ὃς εὗρεν χάριν ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ

who found favor before ¬the God

The pronoun who refers to David. It may be helpful to begin a new sentence here. Alternate translation: “David found favor before God”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

ὃς εὗρεν χάριν ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ

who found favor before ¬the God

Here the phrase before God refers to God’s opinion by association with the way that God would assess anything that came to his attention in front of him. Alternate translation: “God regarded David with favor”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

εὑρεῖν

/to/_find

Stephen is speaking. David did not ask God if he could go look for this dwelling. David asked God if he could build it. Alternate translation: “to build”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

σκήνωμα

/a/_tent

The word dwelling refers to a permanent habitation, that is, a house. Stephen is using the word to mean a temple. He is speaking of this temple as if it was a house in which God lived, since God’s presence was there. Alternate translation: “a house”

Note 6 topic: translate-textvariants

τῷ οἴκῳ Ἰακώβ

˱for˲_the house ˱of˲_Jacob

Some ancient manuscripts read “the house of Jacob.” ULT follows that reading. Other ancient manuscripts read “the God of Jacob.” If a translation of the Bible exists in your region, you may wish to use the reading that it has. If a translation of the Bible does not exist in your region, you may wish to use the reading of ULT.

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

τῷ οἴκῳ Ἰακώβ

˱for˲_the house ˱of˲_Jacob

Here, house means all the people descended from a particular person. It envisions them as if they were one household living together. So the house of Jacob means all the people descended from the patriarch Jacob, who was also known as Israel. Alternate translation: “the people of Israel”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

7:1-53 Stephen responded to the accusations by testifying about his Lord (cp. Luke 21:12-17). Instead of defending himself against their prosecution, he became a witness in God’s prosecution of them, exposing their stubbornness and unfaithfulness to God. Stephen’s recital of Israel’s past reminded them of their repeated rejections of those whom God had sent.
• Stephen’s review of Israel’s history has three principal parts, dealing with the work of the patriarchs (Acts 7:2-16), the ministry of Moses (7:17-43), and the role of the Tabernacle and the Temple (7:44-50). Stephen followed up his historical survey with a clear attack on the hard-heartedness of his own people. With a prophetic challenge, he urged them to stop rebelling against the Holy Spirit and turn to God with repentance and faith.
