OET (OET-LV)But being full of_the_ holy _spirit, having_looked_intently into the heaven, he_saw the_glory of_god, and Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) having_stood by the_right of_ the _god,

OET (OET-RV)But being full of the holy spirit, Stephen stared up into the sky and was able to see God’s splendour, as well as seeing Yeshua standing there on God’s right.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

πλήρης Πνεύματος Ἁγίου

full ˱of˲_/the/_Spirit Holy

Luke is speaking of Stephen as if he were a container that the Holy Spirit could fill. Alternate translation: [inspired by the Holy Spirit]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἀτενίσας εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν, εἶδεν

/having/_looked_intently into ¬the heaven ˱he˲_saw

The implication is that only Stephen saw this vision, not anyone else who was present. Alternate translation: [staring up into heaven, he saw in a vision]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

δόξαν Θεοῦ

/the/_glory ˱of˲_God

The implication is that Stephen saw a bright light that expressed the magnificent presence of God. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state that explicitly. Alternate translation: [a bright light that expressed the glorious presence of God]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj

Ἰησοῦν ἑστῶτα ἐκ δεξιῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ

Jesus /having/_stood by /the/_right ¬the ˱of˲_God

Luke is using the adjective right as a noun in order to indicate the right side. Your language may use adjectives in the same way. If not, you could translate this with a noun phrase. Alternate translation: [Jesus standing at the right side of God]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

Ἰησοῦν ἑστῶτα ἐκ δεξιῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ

Jesus /having/_stood by /the/_right ¬the ˱of˲_God

In this culture, the place at the right side of a ruler was a position of honor. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could indicate that explicitly. Alternate translation: [Jesus standing in a place of honor next to God]

Note 6 topic: translate-symaction

Ἰησοῦν ἑστῶτα ἐκ δεξιῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ

Jesus /having/_stood by /the/_right ¬the ˱of˲_God

Elsewhere in the New Testament, Jesus is described as “sitting” at the right of God. Many interpreters believe that Jesus stood on this occasion to honor Stephen for his courage and faithful testimony. If there is a gesture with similar meaning in your culture, you could consider using it here in your translation. Alternate translation: [Jesus, in a place of honor next to God, standing to honor him]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

7:55-56 Jesus standing . . . at God’s right hand: Usually Jesus is described as seated in heaven at God’s right hand (2:33-34; 5:31; Luke 20:42; 22:69; Rom 8:34; Eph 1:20; Col 3:1; Heb 1:3, 13; 10:12). One possible explanation is that Jesus was welcoming Stephen, the first martyr, to heaven with honor. Stephen had confessed his Lord faithfully on earth, and now his Lord honored his promise to confess his faithful servant in heaven, standing as a witness to defend him (Matt 10:32; Luke 12:8).
• the Son of Man standing: Cp. Dan 7:13-14. The Jewish leaders understood that Stephen was speaking of Jesus as the divine Son of Man (Acts 7:57), a title that speaks of Jesus’ power and authority (cp. Rev 1:12-15).
