OET (OET-RV) Then all of his brothers and sisters and everyone who’d known him before, came to his house and had a meal with him, and they comforted him and consoled him about all the troubles that Yahweh had brought on him. Then they each gave him a silver coin and a gold ring.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: translate-symaction

וַיֹּאכְל֨וּ עִמּ֣וֹ לֶחֶם֮ בְּבֵיתוֹ֒

and,ate with=him/it food/grain/bread in/on/at/with,house,his

Eating a meal with Job in his home was a symbolic action that acknowledged Job’s restored place in the community. Job had complained in 30:10 about how people were staying away from him a symbolic action that conveyed disrespect and disapproval. Job’s family and friends were now showing respect and approval. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could explain the significance of this action. Alternate translation: “and they ate bread with him in his house to show their respect for him and their approval of him”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

לֶחֶם֮

food/grain/bread

The author is using one kind of food, bread, to mean food in general. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “a meal”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet

וַיָּנֻ֤דוּ לוֹ֙ וַיְנַחֲמ֣וּ אֹת֔וֹ

and,showed_~_sympathy to=him/it and,comforted DOM=him/it

The terms consoled and comforted mean similar things. The author is using the two terms together for emphasis. If it would be clearer for your readers, you could express the emphasis with a single phrase. Alternate translation: “And they offered him much sympathy”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

הָ֣רָעָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־הֵבִ֥יא יְהוָ֖ה

the,evil which/who he/it_brought YHWH

The author is speaking as if troubles were an object that Yahweh could have brought to Job and put on top of him. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “the troubles that Yahweh had caused him to experience”

Note 5 topic: translate-bmoney

קְשִׂיטָ֣ה אֶחָ֔ת

piece_of_money one

A kesitah was a piece of silver of a certain weight that had not been minted into a coin. Its exact value is uncertain. You may wish to translate the term kesitah with a general expression. Alternate translation: “a piece of silver”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

42:11 Although Job was restored, he still needed to be consoled and comforted for the loss of his children. Following Job’s own earlier practice (4:4; 16:5), his family and former friends took up where the three other friends left off (2:11; cp. 2 Cor 7:6).
• The gift of money was not so much charity to provide a financial basis for Job’s restored fortune as it was to honor and seek the favor of an influential man (e.g., Prov 18:16), and perhaps even to assuage disfavor (e.g., Gen 32:20; 33:10; 43:11; 1 Sam 25:27).
• A gold ring was worn in a woman’s nose (Gen 24:47; Prov 11:22; Isa 3:21) or on the ears of either men or women (Gen 35:4; Exod 32:2-3; Judg 8:24).

OET (OET-RV) Then all of his brothers and sisters and everyone who’d known him before, came to his house and had a meal with him, and they comforted him and consoled him about all the troubles that Yahweh had brought on him. Then they each gave him a silver coin and a gold ring.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Greek words that they’re translated from.
