In this verse, the author is reintroducing Rehoboam as a participant in the story. He was first introduced briefly in [11:43](../11/43.md) as Solomon’s son and successor. The author is now reintroducing him formally as the king of Judah. Your language may have its own way of reintroducing participants that you can use in your translation. See the discussion in the introduction to this chapter of how the author introduces his accounts of the reigns of kings.

The author is using a son of 41 years as a common expression of the culture to mean “41 years old.” If this phrase does not have that meaning in your language, you could use a comparable expression from your language that does have that meaning, or you could state the meaning plainly.
