OET (OET-LV)And see, you_will_be_conceiving in your_womb, and you_will_be_bearing a_son, and you_will_be_calling the name of_him Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa).

OET (OET-RV) and listen, you will conceive a baby and go on to give birth to a son, and you should name him Yeshua.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

καὶ ἰδοὺ

and behold

As in 1:20, behold is a term that focuses the attention of the listener on what the speaker is about to say. Alternate translation: “Listen carefully now”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicitinfo

συνλήμψῃ ἐν γαστρὶ, καὶ τέξῃ υἱόν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: καὶ ἰδοὺ συλλήμψῃ ἐν γαστρὶ καὶ τέξῃ υἱόν καὶ καλέσεις τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἰησοῦν)

The phrase conceive in your womb might seem to express unnecessary extra information, and so if you represent all of it in your language, that might not seem natural. However, the details are important here. The expression emphasizes that Jesus was a human son born of a human mother. So be sure to translate this expression in a way that conveys that.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / declarative

καλέσεις τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἰησοῦν

˱you˲_/will_be/_calling the name ˱of˲_him Jesus

As in 1:13, Gabriel is using a statement as a command in order to tell Mary what to do. Alternate translation: “you are to name him Jesus”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

καλέσεις τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἰησοῦν

˱you˲_/will_be/_calling the name ˱of˲_him Jesus

As in 1:13, call his name is an idiom that means to give a child a name. Alternate translation: “name him Jesus”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

1:31 you will name him Jesus: Jesus means “the Lord saves.”

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Greek words that they’re translated from.
