God sent an angel to tell Mary that she would have a son and that his name would be Jesus. He would be a king forever. This surprised and frightened Mary. She asked the angel how this would happen, as she was a virgin. She had never had sexual relations with a man. The angel said that the power of God would overshadow her and cause her to become pregnant. She would give birth to a son, and he would be called the Son of God. Mary believed God’s message, and she was willing for this to happen to her.
Some other possible headings for this section are:
The angel Gabriel predicts the virgin birth of Jesus the Christ
Angel Gabriel announces to the virgin Mary that God will cause her to give birth to a son
The Birth of Jesus is Announced (GNT)
For no word from God will ever fail.”
For there is nothing that God cannot do.”
God can do anything.”
For: The word For here introduces the explanation for Mary’s future pregnancy and Elizabeth’s current pregnancy. Mary will be able to have a son without a husband because God can do anything. Elizabeth was able to conceive a son in her old age because God can do anything. Express this connection in a natural way in your language. In some languages the connection may be implied without a conjunction.
no word from God will ever fail: The Greek clause that the BSB translates as no word from God will ever fail is literally “nothing will be impossible with God” (as in the NET). It refers to Mary’s future pregnancy, but it is also a general statement and includes Elizabeth’s pregnancy. So in some languages, it is more natural to use a present form here.
Some other ways to translate this are:
there is nothing that God cannot do
God can do anything

ὅτι
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὅτι οὐκ ἀδυνατήσει παρά τοῦ Θεοῦ παν ῥῆμα)
The word For indicates that the sentence it introduces explains the reason for what the previous sentence described. Alternate translation: [This shows that]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / doublenegatives
οὐκ ἀδυνατήσει παρὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ πᾶν ῥῆμα
not ˓will_be˒_unattaining (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὅτι οὐκ ἀδυνατήσει παρά τοῦ Θεοῦ παν ῥῆμα)
If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate this double negative as a positive statement. Alternate translation: [God is able to do anything he says]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
οὐκ ἀδυνατήσει παρὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ πᾶν ῥῆμα
not ˓will_be˒_unattaining (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ὅτι οὐκ ἀδυνατήσει παρά τοῦ Θεοῦ παν ῥῆμα)
Here, the term word could mean: (1) since Mary uses the same term in the next verse to describe the message that Gabriel has brought from God, Gabriel may be using it to mean that message as well. Alternate translation: [God is able to do anything he says] (2) Gabriel may be using the term in a general sense to mean “thing.” Alternate translation: [everything is possible with God]
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
