Section 23:26–43: Soldiers nailed Jesus to a cross

In this section the Roman soldiers did what their commander Pontius Pilate had ordered them to do. They led Jesus outside the town to the place where they crucified criminals. There they nailed Jesus on a cross. They did the same to two other men, who were criminals. Then they made the three men hang there until they died. The Jewish leaders, the soldiers, and even one of the criminals mocked Jesus. But the other criminal believed in him.

Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom!”

Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom!”: The same criminal continued to speak, but here he spoke to Jesus, instead of to the other criminal. He addressed Jesus by name. In this context the man was being very respectful to Jesus. He implied that he believed that Jesus was the Messiah and that he would rule as king.

In some languages it may be disrespectful or unnatural for the man to address Jesus by name. If this is true in your language, you may be able to use another respectful form of address that is appropriate for a great leader. You should express the request in a respectful way. For example:

Then he said to Jesus, “Please remember me…”

Then he said to Jesus, “Lord/Sir, please remember me…”

remember me: The Greek word that the BSB translates as remember can be used in several ways. Here remember me means “keep thinking about me,” “care for me.” The man on the cross was asking Jesus to show him favor and kindness in his future kingdom. Some other ways to translate remember me are:

think about me

think of me and be gracious to me (TRT)

remember me and treat me with kindness/mercy

when You come into Your kingdom!: The phrase when You come into Your kingdomThere is a textual issue here that involves the Greek word that the BSB translates as “into.” Some Greek manuscripts have “in.” This difference probably does not affect the meaning in a crucial way. Some commentators have seen a difference in whether the phrase refers to the kingdom in heaven or whether it refers to the time when Jesus will come to earth again and establish the kingdom here. The man referred to the future kingdom when the Messiah will rule. Probably the verse does not imply anything about where this kingdom will be. refers to the time when Jesus will rule as the Messiah King. Some other ways to translate this are:

when you come into power (CEV)

when you rule as king

This is an imperative, but it should be translated as a polite request rather than as a command. It may be helpful to add an expression such as “please” to make this clear. Alternate translation: [please do what you can to help me]

23:42 remember me when you come into your Kingdom: The criminal was perhaps thinking of the resurrection at the end of time, when Jesus would be raised up and vindicated by God.
