OET (OET-LV)And when they_came to the place which being_called the_skull, there they_executed_on_a_stake him and the criminals, one on_one_hand on the_right, one on_the_other_hand on the_left.

OET (OET-RV)When they got to the place named ‘The Skull’, they attached Yeshua onto a post[fn] and the same for the two criminals, one on each side of him,

23:33 Luke doesn’t state whether or not the post had a cross-piece (which would then form a cross or a T).

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

ὅτε ἦλθον ἐπὶ τὸν τόπον

when ˱they˲_came (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ὅτε ἦλθον ἐπί τόν τόπον τόν καλούμενον Κρανίον ἐκεῖ ἐσταύρωσαν αὐτόν καί τούς κακούργους ὅν μέν ἐκ δεξιῶν ὅν δέ ἐξ ἀριστερῶν)

The pronoun they includes the soldiers, the criminals, and Jesus. Alternate translation: [when they all arrived at the place]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

τὸν καλούμενον

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ὅτε ἦλθον ἐπί τόν τόπον τόν καλούμενον Κρανίον ἐκεῖ ἐσταύρωσαν αὐτόν καί τούς κακούργους ὅν μέν ἐκ δεξιῶν ὅν δέ ἐξ ἀριστερῶν)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form. Alternate translation: [that people call]

Note 3 topic: translate-names

Κρανίον

˓the˒_Skull

The Skull is the name of a place. Even though it consists of an article and a common noun, translate it following the conventions of your language for names.

Note 4 topic: writing-pronouns

ἐσταύρωσαν αὐτὸν

˱they˲_crucified (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ὅτε ἦλθον ἐπί τόν τόπον τόν καλούμενον Κρανίον ἐκεῖ ἐσταύρωσαν αὐτόν καί τούς κακούργους ὅν μέν ἐκ δεξιῶν ὅν δέ ἐξ ἀριστερῶν)

In this case the pronoun they refers to the Roman soldiers. Alternate translation: [the Roman soldiers crucified Jesus]

Note 5 topic: translate-unknown

ἐσταύρωσαν αὐτὸν

˱they˲_crucified (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ὅτε ἦλθον ἐπί τόν τόπον τόν καλούμενον Κρανίον ἐκεῖ ἐσταύρωσαν αὐτόν καί τούς κακούργους ὅν μέν ἐκ δεξιῶν ὅν δέ ἐξ ἀριστερῶν)

See how you translated the term “crucify” in [23:21](../23/21.md). Alternate translation: [the Roman soldiers nailed Jesus to a cross to execute him]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj

ὃν μὲν ἐκ δεξιῶν, ὃν δὲ ἐξ ἀριστερῶν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ὅτε ἦλθον ἐπί τόν τόπον τόν καλούμενον Κρανίον ἐκεῖ ἐσταύρωσαν αὐτόν καί τούς κακούργους ὅν μέν ἐκ δεξιῶν ὅν δέ ἐξ ἀριστερῶν)

Luke is using the adjectives right and left as nouns to indicate locations. Your language may use adjectives in the same way. If not, you could supply a noun such as “side” for clarity. Alternate translation: [they crucified one criminal at Jesus’ right side and the other criminal at Jesus’ left side]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

23:33 The Skull: Greek kranion; the Aramaic term is Golgotha (Matt 27:33; Mark 15:22). The location is uncertain, but it has traditionally been associated with the present Church of the Holy Sepulchre. A less likely location is Gordon’s Calvary, a rock outcrop near the Garden Tomb.
• they nailed him to the cross: Victims were often tied to the cross or nailed through the wrists and ankles to hasten death—here, the bodies had to be buried before sunset due to the approaching Sabbath.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
