OET (OET-LV) And he_said to_him:
Truly, I_am_saying to_you, today you_will_be with me in the paradise.
Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns
εἶπεν αὐτῷ
˱he˲_said ˱to˲_him
The pronoun he refers to Jesus, and the pronoun him refers to the second criminal. Alternate translation: “Jesus said to this criminal”
ἀμήν, σοι λέγω
truly ˱to˲_you ˱I˲_/am/_saying
Jesus says this to emphasize what he is about to tell the criminal. Alternate translation: “I can assure you”
σήμερον μετ’ ἐμοῦ ἔσῃ ἐν τῷ Παραδείσῳ
today with me ˱you˲_will_be in ¬the Paradise
See the discussion in the General Notes to this chapter of how the term today belongs with this promise that Jesus is making to the criminal, and not with the introduction to the statement. Alternate translation: “you will be with me in paradise today”
τῷ Παραδείσῳ
¬the Paradise
See the discussion in the General Notes to this chapter of the term paradise. Alternate translation: “in the place where people whom God has accepted go when they die”
23:43 Jesus corrected the man by assuring him that today he would be vindicated in God’s presence (see also 2:11; 4:21; 5:26; 19:9).
• The word translated paradise comes from a Persian word that means “garden”; it was used in Jewish literature for the Garden of Eden and also for heaven, the place of eternal bliss for God’s people (see 2 Cor 12:4; Rev 2:7; cp. Luke 16:22-23; 2 Cor 5:8).
OET (OET-LV) And he_said to_him:
Truly, I_am_saying to_you, today you_will_be with me in the paradise.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Greek words that they’re translated from.
