Section 22:66–23:25: Leaders put Jesus on trial and condemned him to die

Luke indicates that Jesus had several trials. These trials can also be considered to be several parts of the same trial. Luke recorded the details of four of these trials. The chart here lists them according to who was leading at each trial:

22:66–71	the Jewish council
23:1–5	Pilate
23:6–12	Herod
23:13–25	Pilate again

In all of Jesus’ trials, there was no one who could prove that Jesus had broken any law of God or man. However, even though he had not done anything wrong, the Roman governor Pilate sentenced him to die on a cross.

The Notes suggest a section heading for each of the trials in the chart. However, you may decide to have one heading for Section Group 22:66–23:25 like the one suggested in the Section Group box above. Another example of a heading for this section group is:

This was the man whom the people had asked Pilate to free.
This Barabbas was the man that the crowd asked Pilate to release for them at Passover.

he released the one imprisoned for insurrection and murder: This statement indicates that Pilate released the man that the people asked him to release in 23:18. This man was named Barabbas. As 23:19 said, he was in prison for insurrection and murder.

In some languages it may be helpful to supply the name Barabbas here. For example:

He freed Barabbas, who had been put in prison for rioting and murdering, because that’s what they wanted. (GW)

and handed Jesus over to their will.

But as for Jesus, Pilate gave him up for the people’s will to be done to him.
Then Pilate took Jesus and gave him to his soldiers/men to execute/kill him, just as the people/crowd wanted.

and handed Jesus: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as and introduces a contrast between what Pilate did for Barabbas in this verse and what he did to Jesus. The word Jesus is emphasized in Greek. One way to translate this contrast is:

But as for Jesus

Translate the contrast in a way that is natural in your language.

over to their will: The Greek clause that the BSB translates as over to their will indicates that Pilate gave Jesus into the control of other people. He allowed them to do what they wanted with Jesus. The word their refers to the Jewish people and their leaders. They wanted Jesus to be executed/killed.

The context implies that Pilate ordered his soldiers to take Jesus and execute him, as the Jewish people wanted. It does not imply that the Jewish people were in charge of the execution.

Some other ways to translate this part of the verse are:

Then Pilate allowed Jesus to be taken away so that he would be killed as they wanted.
