OET (OET-RV) The women who’d come from Galilee followed Yosef and his men and saw the tomb and how the body was placed inside,
This section tells about how people buried Jesus’ body. Sometimes the Romans did not allow the body of a crucified person to be buried.Nolland (p. 1166) says, “The bodies of condemned criminals were not always released for burial, especially in cases of treason….For the body to have stayed on the cross overnight would have been a violation of Jewish custom (for the most part, the Romans seem to have shown a sensitivity to this).” But for the Jews, a proper burial was important. It was their custom to bury the body on the same day that a person died. A respected Jewish man named Joseph decided that Jesus must have a proper burial. So Joseph went to Pilate and asked permission to take Jesus’ body and bury it.
The Sabbath Day began just a few hours after Jesus died. On the Sabbath it was forbidden to move a dead body. So Joseph had to act quickly in all that he did.

The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee
¶ Those women who came with Jesus from Galilee
¶ The women who came to the city with Jesus from the region/province of Galilee
The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee: This phrase refers to the same women who were mentioned in 23:49. There the BSB refers to them as “the women who had followed Him from Galilee.” Refer back to them in the way that is natural in your language.
followed,
went with Joseph.
had followed Joseph to the tomb.
followed: The verb followed indicates that the women accompanied Joseph when he went to the tomb in 23:53. In some languages it may be necessary to say explicitly where the women went, or where Joseph went. Some other ways to translate it are:
had followed Joseph to the tomb
followed closely behind Joseph (GW)
went with Joseph (GNT)
and they saw the tomb and how His body was placed.
They saw the tomb and observed how Jesus’ body was placed in it.
They saw how the men laid Jesus’ body in the tomb.
and they saw the tomb and how His body was placed: This clause indicates that the women went all the way to the tomb with Joseph and saw it. They also saw how Jesus’ body was laid in the tomb. The text does not necessarily imply that the women went into the tomb. It implies that the tomb was still open and the women were able to look inside and see Jesus’ body.
In some languages it may be necessary to say that the women arrived at the place where the tomb was before saying that they saw it. Notice that Joseph as well as the women arrived and saw the tomb. Luke mentioned only the women because they are in focus here. The women observed the location of the tomb carefully because they planned to return to it on Sunday morning. After Jesus rose from the dead, his opponents wanted to say that he did not really rise from the dead. Some said that maybe the women went to the wrong tomb on Sunday morning. This verse shows that the women knew very well where the tomb was, and when they went back there on Sunday, Jesus was no longer there.
Some other ways to translate the clause are:
When the women got there, they saw the tomb and how Jesus’ body was placed in it.
They observed the tomb and how his body was laid in it. (GW)
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
αἵτινες ἦσαν συνεληλυθυῖαι ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας αὐτῷ
who were ˓having˒_come_together from ¬the Galilee ˱with˲_him
The expression had come out is an idiom that means to have traveled from a place. Alternate translation: [who had traveled from the region of Galilee with Jesus]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis
κατακολουθήσασαι
˓having˒_followed
Luke is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. If it would be helpful in your language, you could supply these words from the context. Alternate translation: [followed Joseph when he took the body of Jesus away]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / hendiadys
τὸ μνημεῖον καὶ ὡς ἐτέθη τὸ σῶμα αὐτοῦ
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: κατακολουθήσασαι Δέ αἱ γυναῖκες αἵτινες ἦσαν συνεληλυθυῖαι ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας αὐτῷ ἐθεάσαντο τό μνημεῖον καί ὡς ἐτέθη τό σῶμα αὐτοῦ)
Luke is using a figure of speech in which two phrases are connected with the word and, and one of the phrases describes the other. Alternate translation: [the tomb where Joseph put the body of Jesus]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
ὡς ἐτέθη τὸ σῶμα αὐτοῦ
how ˓was˒_laid (Some words not found in SR-GNT: κατακολουθήσασαι Δέ αἱ γυναῖκες αἵτινες ἦσαν συνεληλυθυῖαι ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας αὐτῷ ἐθεάσαντο τό μνημεῖον καί ὡς ἐτέθη τό σῶμα αὐτοῦ)
If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form, and you could state who did the action. Alternate translation: [how Joseph put the body of Jesus there]
OET (OET-LV) And the women having_followed, who were having_come_together from the Galilaia with_him, saw the tomb and how the body of_him was_laid.
OET (OET-RV) The women who’d come from Galilee followed Yosef and his men and saw the tomb and how the body was placed inside,
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
