OET (OET-LV)And the little_child was_growing and was_being_strengthened, being_filled with_wisdom, and the_grace of_god was on him.

OET (OET-RV)The young boy grew and got stronger, and started showing amazing wisdom and it was clear that God was blessing him.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 2:21–40: The baby Jesus at the temple

The events in this section happened some days after Jesus was born.

In 2:21–24, Luke mentioned three ceremonies that were done when Jewish boys were born:

  1. the baby boy was circumcised;

  2. the mother was ritually purified;

  3. the baby boy was presented to God.

In 2:25–38 Luke described two other events that happened while Joseph, Mary, and Jesus were at the temple in Jerusalem. God allowed two righteous people named Simeon and Anna to see Jesus and to thank God for him. Simeon spoke a prophecy about Jesus and Mary.

In 2:39–40 Luke concluded the section. Joseph and Mary took Jesus back to their home in Nazareth, where he grew and became strong and wise. The Gospel of Matthew indicates that before they went to Nazareth, Joseph and Mary took Jesus to Egypt and stayed there for some time. Although Luke does not mention this, you should connect the clauses in 2:39 in a way that does not contradict it.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some other possible headings for this section are:

Jesus’ Parents Obey Moses’ Teachings (GW)

Jesus Presented at the Temple (NASB)

Some English versions begin new sections at 2:25 and at 2:36. If you decide to do this in your translation, some possible headings are:

Simeon saw Jesus and prophesied about him (2:25)

Anna thanked God for Jesus and told others about him (2:36)

Simeon’s Prophecy (2:25)

Anna’s Prophecy (2:36)

2:40a

And the Child grew and became strong.

grew and became strong: A few Greek manuscripts add the words “in spirit” after strong, perhaps to make it similar to 1:80. Most English versions follow the manuscripts that do not include these words. Most commentators agree that “strong” here refers to physical strength. However, the KJV follows the manuscripts that include the words “in spirit.” The word strong here refers to physical strength. As Jesus grew, he became physically strong.

2:40b

He was filled with wisdom,

He was filled with wisdom: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates literally as filled with wisdom is an idiom. It means that Jesus became very wise. Consider whether you also have an idiom in your language to express this.

The word wisdom here refers to understanding and insight, especially understanding of spiritual things. It does not refer only to intelligence or to knowledge that is learned from studying.

Another way to translate this is:

He became very wise

He gained great insight/ understanding

2:40c

and the grace of God was upon Him.

the grace of God was upon Him: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as the grace of God was upon Him is an idiom. It indicates here that God continually favored and blessed Jesus. Jesus received the ongoing benefits of God’s favor during the years that he was maturing.

The word grace refers here to God’s kindness, favor, or blessing. He showed this kindness to Jesus in special ways. Some other ways to translate the grace of God was upon Him are:

God placed his special favor upon him. (NLT96)

God continually blessed him.

See grace, Meaning 1, in the Glossary.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἐκραταιοῦτο

˓was_being˒_strengthened

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form. Alternate translation: [became stronger]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

πληρούμενον σοφίᾳ

˓being˒_filled ˱with˲_wisdom

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form. Alternate translation: [learning what was wise]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

χάρις Θεοῦ ἦν ἐπ’ αὐτό

˓the˒_grace ˱of˲_God was on him

As in [2:25](../02/25.md), upon is a spatial metaphor. Alternate translation: [God blessed him in special ways]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

2:40 filled with wisdom, and God’s favor was on him (cp. 1:80; 2:52): The twin statements about Jesus’ wisdom (2:40, 52) frame the story about Jesus’ extraordinary wisdom at an early age.
