In this section, Joseph and Mary took Jesus to the Feast of the Passover in Jerusalem. This may have been Jesus’ first time to go there for Passover. While Jesus was in Jerusalem, he went to the Temple and discussed religious matters with Jewish religious leaders.
When Joseph and Mary left Jerusalem to return to Nazareth, they traveled with a group of people. They did not realize that Jesus had stayed in Jerusalem and was not traveling with them. This may have happened because of the way Jews normally walked in smaller groups when they traveled together. The women and small children walked ahead since they traveled more slowly. A boy normally traveled with his mother. But when he became a man, perhaps as early as twelve years old, he traveled with his father. So, as they returned from Jerusalem, Mary probably thought that Jesus was with Joseph, and Joseph may have thought that he was with Mary. Joseph and Mary traveled for a whole day before they realized that Jesus was not with them. The events in this section show three things:
Joseph and Mary did not know where Jesus was;
they did not know exactly what he was telling them when they found him;
by the age of twelve (or before), Jesus was aware that he was God’s Son.
Some other possible headings for this section are:
Mary and Joseph Find Jesus With the Teachers in the Temple Courtyard (GW)
Jesus when he was twelve years old
And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature,
And Jesus grew in body and in wise/correct thinking.
Jesus became wiser and grew physically. (NCV)
Jesus grew in wisdom and stature: In some languages it may be more natural to change the order of wisdom and stature here. For example:
Jesus grew both in body and in wisdom (GNT)
grew: The Greek word that the BSB translates as grew is literally “increased.” In this context, Jesus increased in wisdom and size. This indicates that Jesus grew and developed. He was becoming mature.
wisdom: The word wisdom here means the ability to think clearly and sensibly, to understand matters, and to be able to act wisely based on that understanding. In the Bible, wisdom often refers to godly wisdom. A person who has godly wisdom understands what God says and what God wants people to do. The wise person acts on the basis of that understanding.
stature: The word stature refers here to Jesus’ body. Jesus was growing and maturing physically. He was becoming a man.
and in favor with God and man.
He gained favor from God and people. (GW)
Both God and people were pleased with him more and more.
and in favor with God and man: The phrase and in favor with God and man means that God approved of him and people also approved of him. That approval from God and man increased as Jesus grew. Other ways to say this are:
He gained favor from God and people. (GW)
increased…in divine and human favor (NRSV)
favor: In this context favor refers to an attitude that people had toward Jesus. They were pleased with him and appreciated him.
man: The Greek word that the BSB translates as man is literally “people,” including both males and females. For example:
gained favor from…people (GW)

Ἰησοῦς προέκοπτεν τῇ σοφίᾳ, καὶ ἡλικίᾳ
Jesus ˓was˒_progressing ¬the ˱in˲_wisdom (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί Ἰησοῦς προέκοπτεν τῇ σοφίᾳ καί ἡλικίᾳ καί χάριτι παρά Θεῷ καί ἀνθρώποις)
If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate the ideas behind the abstract nouns wisdom and stature with adjectives. These two terms refer to mental and physical growth. Alternate translation: [Jesus steadily became wiser and stronger]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns
χάριτι παρὰ Θεῷ καὶ ἀνθρώποις
favor (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί Ἰησοῦς προέκοπτεν τῇ σοφίᾳ καί ἡλικίᾳ καί χάριτι παρά Θεῷ καί ἀνθρώποις)
If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind the abstract noun favor with verbs. The phrase in favor with God and people refers to spiritual and social growth. Alternate translation: [God blessed him more and more, and people admired him more and more]
OET (OET-LV) And Yaʸsous was_progressing the in_wisdom, and stature, and favour with god and people.
OET (OET-RV) and so Yeshua continued to grow wiser and taller, and in favour with both God and the people.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
