OET (OET-LV) And it_became at the time them to_be there, were_fulfilled the days of_the child her to_bear.
In this section the things that the angel told Mary about in 1:31–37 happened. In those verses the angel told Mary that she would give birth to a son through the power of the Holy Spirit. This would happen even though she was a virgin. In this section, that prophecy was fulfilled. Mary gave birth to Jesus in Bethlehem. This section begins about six months after John the Baptizer was born (1:26).
It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some other possible headings for this section are:
The Birth of Jesus (GNT)
Mary gave birth to the Savior
While they were there,
While they(dual) were in Bethlehem,
During the days that Mary and Joseph were in Bethlehem,
While they were there: The pronoun they refers to Joseph and Mary. The word there refers to the town of Bethlehem. During the time that Joseph and Mary were in Bethlehem, Jesus was born.
the time came for her Child to be born.
Mary’s time for giving birth arrived,
the time came for her to have/deliver her baby.
the time came for her Child to be born: The BSB translates this with a passive verb, but in Greek this clause is active, literally “the days were completed for her to give birth.” This indicates that the baby in Mary’s womb had matured and her body was ready to give birth. Some languages may have an idiom for this. Another way to say this, with an active verb, is:
the time came for Mary to give birth to her baby
Note 1 topic: writing-newevent
ἐγένετο δὲ
˱it˲_became (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐγένετο Δέ ἐν τῷ εἶναι αὐτούς ἐκεῖ ἐπλήσθησαν αἱ ἡμέραι τοῦ τεκεῖν αὐτήν)
This phrase marks the beginning of the next event in the story. If your language has a similar expression that it uses to introduce an event, you could use it in your translation.
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
ἐν τῷ εἶναι αὐτοὺς ἐκεῖ
at the_‹time› to_be (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐγένετο Δέ ἐν τῷ εἶναι αὐτούς ἐκεῖ ἐπλήσθησαν αἱ ἡμέραι τοῦ τεκεῖν αὐτήν)
The word they refers to Joseph and Mary being in Bethlehem. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state that explicitly. Alternate translation: [while Mary and Joseph were in Bethlehem]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
ἐπλήσθησαν αἱ ἡμέραι τοῦ τεκεῖν αὐτήν
˓were˒_fulfilled the days ˱of˲_the_‹child› ˓to˒_bear her
If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form. Alternate translation: [the time came for Mary to give birth]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
ἐπλήσθησαν αἱ ἡμέραι
˓were˒_fulfilled the days
Here Luke uses the term days to refer to a particular time. Alternate translation: [the time came]
τοῦ τεκεῖν αὐτήν
˱of˲_the_‹child› ˓to˒_bear her
Your language may require you to state the object of deliver. Alternate translation: [for her to deliver her baby] or [for her to have her baby]
2:1-7 Having described John’s birth, Luke gives a parallel account of Jesus’ birth, with emphasis on its lowliness. Although he was the glorious Messiah, Jesus entered the world in humble circumstances.
OET (OET-LV) And it_became at the time them to_be there, were_fulfilled the days of_the child her to_bear.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
