49:20 Note: KJB: Ps.49.19

OET (OET-RV)Anyone who has prestige but no understanding
⇔  is like the wild animals that will die.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-condition-hypothetical

אָדָ֣ם בִּ֭יקָר וְלֹ֣א יָבִ֑ין נִמְשַׁ֖ל כַּבְּהֵמ֣וֹת

(Some words not found in UHB: go until generation_of his_ancestors_of,his until forever not see light )

A human in honor, but he does not understand introduces the first part of a possible condition. What the psalmist describes in the rest of this verse is true if this condition happens. Use a natural form in your language for introducing a condition that could happen. Alternate translation: [Suppose a human is in honor, but he does not understand. Then he is likened to the beasts]

Note 2 topic: writing-poetry

נִמְשַׁ֖ל כַּבְּהֵמ֣וֹת נִדְמֽוּ

(Some words not found in UHB: go until generation_of his_ancestors_of,his until forever not see light )

This is the second occurrence of the refrain in this psalm. We recommend that you show this to your readers by translating the phrases here the same way that you translated them in the first occurrence of this refrain in [49:12](../049/012.md). Alternate translation: [he is like the beasts, which perish]
