uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וְשִׁלַּשְׁתָּ֙

and,third

See how you translated the similar expression in [20:12](../20/12.md). Alternate translation: [And on the day after tomorrow]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicitinfo

אֲשֶׁר־נִסְתַּ֥רְתָּ שָּׁ֖ם

which/who hid there

It might seem that this expression contains extra information that would not be natural to express in your language. If so, you can shorten it. Alternate translation: [where you hid yourself]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

בְּי֣וֹם הַֽמַּעֲשֶׂ֑ה

in/on=day the,incident

Jonathan assumes that David will know that by the day of the deed, he means the time when Saul first tried to kill David, since Jonathan told David then, “stay in a secret place and hide yourself” ([19:2](../19/02.md)). You could indicate this explicitly in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [at the time when my father first tried to kill you]

Note 4 topic: translate-names

אֵ֖צֶל הָאֶ֥בֶן הָאָֽזֶל

beside the,stone the,Ezel

The name Ezel is the name of a stone. The name Ezel means “departure.” It is possible that the stone got this name because it was the place where David and Jonathan parted from one another, as [20:41-42](../20/41.md) describes. If so, the author would be using the later name while presenting what Jonathan said here, even though the stone did not have that name at this time. (The author does something similar with the name Ebenezer in [4:1](../04/01.md).) If it would be helpful to your readers, you could explain this in a footnote.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

20:18-22 Jonathan’s ruse would allow David to get the message even if there could be no face-to-face meeting; the boy’s presence would allay suspicion and provide Jonathan an alibi for going to the field. As it happened, no one but the boy accompanied Jonathan to the field, so when the boy left, David was able to speak with Jonathan face to face (20:40-42).
