OET (OET-LV) And_swore again Dāvid and_he/it_said well_(know) I_will_show_you(ms) he_knows if/because_that favour I_have_found in/on/at/with_eyes_of_your and_he/it_said not let_him_know this Yōnātān lest he_should_be_grieved and_truly by_the_life of_YHWH and_lives soul_of_your if/because but_step between_me and_between the_death.
OET (OET-RV) “For sure, your father knows that you’ve taken a liking to me,” said David, “and he would have decided not to tell you so you wouldn’t be upset.” Then David made an oath again, “Indeed, as Yahweh is alive, and as your soul is alive, death is definitely only a step away from me.”
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / reduplication
יָדֹ֨עַ יָדַ֜ע אָבִ֗יךָ
to_know knowing I_will_show=you(ms)
David is repeating forms of the verb “know” in order to intensify his expression of the idea it conveys. If your language can repeat words for intensification, it would be appropriate to do that here in your translation. If not, your language may have another way of expressing the intensification. Alternate translation: [Your father certainly knows]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
מָצָ֤אתִי חֵן֙ בְּעֵינֶ֔יךָ
found graciousness/kindness/favour/beauty in/on/at/with,eyes_of,your
See you translated the similar expression in [1:18](../01/18.md). Alternate translation: [you are favorably disposed toward me]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes
וַיֹּ֛אמֶר אַל־יֵֽדַע־זֹ֥את יְהוֹנָתָ֖ן פֶּן־יֵֽעָצֵ֑ב
and=he/it_said not know this(f) Yōnātān/(Jonathan) lest grieved
If it would be clearer in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: [So he decided not to let you know about this, so you would not be grieved]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
פֶּן־יֵֽעָצֵ֑ב
lest grieved
If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [lest it grieve him]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche
חַי־יְהוָה֙ וְחֵ֣י נַפְשֶׁ֔ךָ
he/it_lived YHWH and,lives soul_of,your
David is using one part of Jonathan, his soul, to mean all of him. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [the life of Yahweh, and your life]
Note 6 topic: writing-oathformula
חַי־יְהוָה֙ וְחֵ֣י נַפְשֶׁ֔ךָ
he/it_lived YHWH and,lives soul_of,your
See how you translated the similar expressions in [14:39](../14/39.md), [14:45](../14/45.md), and [19:06](../19/06.md). Alternate translation: [I swear by Yahweh and I swear by your life that]
Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
כְפֶ֔שַׂע בֵּינִ֖י וּבֵ֥ין הַמָּֽוֶת
but,step between,me and=between the,death
David is speaking as if death were an object or a location a short distance away from him that he could reach by taking about a step. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [I am just about to be killed]
20:2-3 Jonathan was naive about his father’s intentions. David’s willingness to swear . . . by the Lord showed how convinced he was about Saul’s intentions.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
Acknowledgements: The Hebrew text, lemmas, and morphology are all thanks to the OSHB and some of the glosses are from Macula Hebrew.
